Wanting to get in on California's booming petroleum industry, a Canadian man named C.C. (Courtney Chauncey) Julian launched Julian Petroleum Company in 1923 in Los Angeles. Julian's company was little more than a vast Ponzi scheme masked as an investment opportunity, bilking millions from eager investors through aggressive newspaper advertising. As the fraud collapsed in 1927, the appointed as receiver, and created Sunset Pacific Oil Company from the remains of Julian Petroleum Company. Sunset Pacific failed with $12 million in debt to Associated Oil, and was reorganized into Sunset Oil Company in 1934. Long story short, Golden Eagle Motor Oil was one of Sunset's first products, and one that helped make the reorganized company a success.

The Northwest Refining Company from Cut Bank opened a new bulk plant in Shelby Montana, featuring Grizzly gasoline, which is widely accepted by motorists in northern Montana, and is made entirely from Montana crude oil. Location of the new plant is south of the railroad tracks, directly across from the Sullivan Hotel. A. J. Wilcox is the distributor of the gasoline. This company was sold to Carter Oil a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey in 1944.

Super Penn Motor Oil

Power-Lube Motor Oil was introduced in 1930 by the Powerine Oil Co. of Santa Fe Springs. Claiming to be ‘smooth as a tigers tread’ and comprised of 100% pure Pennsylvania crude, Power-Lube was popular with motorists and a common sight at service stations across the U.S. throughout the ’30s and ’40s.

John and Luke Hancock started the Pure Oil of Minneapolis in the early 1900's. They sold out to The Pure Oil Company of Ohio in 1920. Luke Hancock continued to work for Pure Oil, and John Hancock started the Hancock Oil Company in Minneapolis. John Hancock died in 1929, at which time the Minneapolis Hancock Oil stations were sold to Phillips.

In 1925, the sale of the Hawkeye Oil Company led to the launch of a new brand of motor oil and gasoline--Red Hat. The short-lived company operated filling stations and sold motor oil to customers. Today, the company's iconic patriotic top hat logo is still fondly remembered by fans of automotive history.

Founded in 1916 and headquarterd in Taft, Sunset Oil Co. marketed Sunset Gasoline and Rainbow Oil. The company was sold in 1958 to Wilshire Oil Co., a subsidiary of Gulf Oil.

Sav'n Sam's Service Stations were found in Northern California. Owned by an Independent Jobber, no longer in the retail business. They carried 3 grades of gasoline, Regular, Ethyl, and Super Ethyl.

Oilzum, one of the first brand names in motor oil, has a rich history dating back to 1888 when F.W. White and H.P. Bagley established the White & Bagley Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. The goal of the company was to develop a practical and uniform quality motor oil with a long service life and good protective properties. Fast forward to 1905, and Oilzum Motor Oil was born. White and Bagley wanted to take the risk and guesswork out of lubrication, and their hard work paid off as Oilzum became a trusted name among early motorists. The familiar Oilzum kid became a fast friend, and the brand took the motor oil industry by storm.
