This beautiful Roman mosaic demonstrates three Roman ideas 1) momento mori (remember death (reminding one to live life to the fullest) 2) tempus fugit (time flies represented by the butterfly) 3) rota fortunae (wheel of fortune (representing life being controlled by fate, the wheel supporting the skull and the clothes of a rich woman on left and a peasant woman on left.

A beautiful 1st century Roman Fresco from the House of the Vettii in Pompeii, destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius eruption of 79 AD

The 5th variation on this theme of the beast tamed by the maiden. Ancient primordial myth brought back to us in the tale of Beauty and the Beast. My inspiration for this was a roman fresco from Pompeii.

2 Roman women are dancing. One of them holds a tambourine. Inspired by a painting on a wall of the house of Diomedes on the road from Pompeii to Herculaneum

I recreated this colorful design after a mosaic of a Roman villa of Pont d'Ancy in Northern France. The original colors were not as bright but quite close.

Phrixus and Helle, the tragic siblings of Greek mythology, doomed to a journey that makes the worst family road trips seem like a picnic. Imagine fleeing from a stepmother straight out of a Grimm fairy tale, they find themselves aboard a ram with a golden fleece. As they soar through the skies, enjoying the view from cloud nine, poor Helle suffers from a serious case of vertigo and takes a tumble into the sea, which is quite the literal interpretation of 'falling head over heels.' And Phrixus? Well, he makes it to safety in Colchis, only to be sacrificed to the gods and have his fleece stolen by a certain famous hero. Talk about a family vacation gone wrong !

Variation #2 of my series of Griffin and Maiden. The earliest references to griffins come from ancient Persia where they were used widely as statues and symbols in palaces. They also had a special place in Persian literature as guardians of light.
