This image was taken on a very blustery day in January with the North Sea crashing into Tynemouth Pier, with the early morning light casting a golden glow in the sky which is reflecting off the pier and the waves. Work on the pier was started in 1854 and it was originally curved, but storm damage to the central part of the pier led to it being re-built in a straight line. The image is also available in colour.

The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide. The image was taken after High Tide on an Autumn morning just as the tide was retreating from the causeway making the island accessible once again.
