This is an original drawing from the award winning children book The Round Sultan and the Straight Answer (1970) by Barbara K. Walker and my grandfather Friso Henstra. With the illustrations for this book he won The Gold Medal in New York in 1971. The story is about a sultan who can't stop eating until the hamal tells him his fate. In this image he is taking a steambath because a doctor tells him he can loose weight this way.

A rocket and planet rings made from the text of Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel From the Earth to the Moon. A little marbled paper planet and the quote from the novel :'Many things have been denied one day only to become realities the next. I've given it a bitof a 50s feel as poor Jules was very ahead of his time :-)

It did not begin as a pulp, however, but as a weekly "story paper" titled The Golden Argosy, consisting of youth-oriented fiction and "rags to riches" tales by the likes of Horatio Alger, Jr. and Edward S. Ellis. It was the brainchild of Frank Andrew Munsey, a Western Union telegraph manager who dreamed "great dreams to the tune of the printing-press."

This original drawing is from the award winning children's book Forgetful Fred by Jay Williams and Friso Henstra (1974) The story is about a forgetful boy named Fred who searches for the Bitter Fruit of Satisfaction for the richest man in the land, Bumberdumble Pott. The fruit is stolen by a witch and in this image Fred is invisible because he wears the Cap of Darkness. He uses the Sword of Sharpness to cut the witches broomstick in two.
