Back in the 1940s during World War One or WW1, acoustic location or sound localization was used immensely for aircraft detection. An acoustic locator is one cool design to have!

The statue 1101, locally known as Tommy is of a First World War British Tommy, striking a pose of tiredness. Tommy sits on the seafront at Seaham Harbour in County Durham and was recently voted the best art work in the UK. Here the image has been enhanced with the important words 'Lest We Forget'. The stone poppy is recreated each year on the approach to Remembrance Sunday and differs in style.

This is the sculpture captures the remarkable moment in December 1914 when enemy soldiers along the Western Front laid down their weapons and emerged from their trenches to shake hands, sing carols, exchange rations, and even take part in small-scale kickabouts. I'm not quite sure where it is going next, but I'm glad that I got to see it today.

The 15th Cavalry Regiment is a cavalry regiment of the United States Army. It was one of the Expansion Units originally established for the Spanish–American War, but has been a general workhorse unit ever since. The 15th Cavalry embarked for the Philippines to quell an insurrection in the United States newly acquired territory. The fierce combat in the Philippine jungles against the savage Moros forged the spirit of the regiment in fire and blood; a spirit exemplified in the motto the regiment chose for itself - Tous pour un, un pour Tous (all for one, one for all).

When the United States entered World War I, the 15th Cavalary Regiment regiment sailed for France as one of the four mounted regiments on duty with the Allied Expeditionary Force. The fighting had already bogged down into trench warfare and the role of horse cavalry was nearly over. The 15th was called upon to dismount and relieve exhausted infantry units in the trenches. It was the tank that finally broke the trench lines to end both the war and the role of the horse soldier. The 15th served occupation duty after the war until June 1919 when it returned to the United States. The 15th Cavalry Regiment was assigned to the American Expeditionary Force.

I made a recent visit to the World War One battlefields in Belgium and France. The poppies were in abundance on the Somme battlefield sites...a poignant yet wonderful sight.

One of the great moments in history was the Christmas Truce of 1914 during the World War one.

Today is the 100th anniversary of when Britain joined World War One. The lights will go out across Merseyside at 10pm tonight to commemorate the event. A virtual candle will be projected onto the Liver Building at 10pm. It will fade away at 11pm and be replaced with info-graphics about World War I. It is inspired by then-Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey’s famous remark on the eve of the outbreak of war: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”. Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on August, 4, 1914, ushering in one of the darkest periods in the country’s history.
