Culzean Castle is a castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, Carrick, on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy, but is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Aberdour Castle is located in the village of Easter Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. Parts of the castle date from around 1200, making Aberdour one of the two oldest datable standing castles in Scotland, along with Castle Sween in Argyll, which was built at around the same time.

A small part of the ruin of Armadale Castle on the beautiful Isle of Skye, Scotland. In 1855 fire destroyed much of the original house which was partly replaced by the present central block designed by David Bryce. Today, the original part of the castle is a sculptured ruin with a fine selection of plants from around the world. Part of the staircase and facade (shown here) remain. Sometimes referred to in Gaelic poetry and song as Eilean a' Cheò (The Misty Isle), Skye is renown for its natural beauty, history and wildlife. Lismore Castle is the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire. Located in the town of Lismore in County Waterford in Ireland, it belonged to the Earls of Desmond, and subsequently to the Dukes of Devonshire from 1753

The imposing gateway buildings at Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire, South Wales. This was built rather late for a castle being started by Sir William ap Thomas in the 1430s. His son, Sir William Herbert, a Knight of the Garter, continued building, creating a home rather than a fortress - though it looks formidable! Young Henry Tudor - later Henry VII was sent here to be brought up as a nobleman. During the Civil War the castle was taken by Parliamentary troops and began to fall into disrepair. Looking across the River Usk as it flows through the market town of Brecon (Aberhonddu) in Powys, Wales, to the town's medieval castle. Beneath its walls the River Honddu discharges into the Usk - an ideal situation for a castle. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The walls of Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire as they rise above the River Swale. Building began in 1071 by the Norman Alan Rufus as a defence against uprisings in the North which had already incurred King William's wrath and retribution. Further improvements such as the 100ft high keep were puit in place by Duke Conan of Brittany - Rufus' great-nephew in the C12th. By the mid 1500s it had fallen out of use but with the rise of tourism was repaired in the 1800s and is a Grade1 listed building Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The gatehouse and walls of Caerphilly Castle (Castell Caerffili) in Caerphilly, South Wales, seen from across the moat. The castle was built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn ap Gruffudd, Begun in 1268 - it was immediately attacked! Building was recommenced in 1271 and it is now the largest castle in ground area in Wales and the second largest castle in Britain! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Donnington Castle is in the village of Donnington near Newbury in Berkshire, England. It dates from 1388 when Sir Richard Abberbury was given Royal permission to build fortifications. In the 15th century the castle passed into the hands of Thomas Chaucer, son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Henry VIII is reported to have stayed here in 1539, as did his daughter Elizabeth I in 1568. At the start of the English Civil War it was in Parliamentary hands before being taken by the Royalists. Finally retaken by Parliament it was 'slighted' to prevent further use.

Bishop Castle A One Man Endeavor Enhanced by Debra Martz This is such a unique and quirky castle that I just had to do some enhancements, textures, added colors. Jim Bishop has been constructing this impressive castle for almost 60 years. It is still a work in progress to this day. It is quite difficult to explain this rock and iron structure with all its levels, angles, soaring towers and outside bridges built around the upper levels. It even has a Grand Ballroom and a fire breathing dragon! Best you go see it for yourself! It is located in Colorado on highway 165 about 24 miles west off I-25 not far from Colorado City and Rye, Colorado. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved

Mystery Castle

An historic, grade 1 listed property, built in the 1830s in Gothic Revival style. Originally in Hampshire but now in Dorset since the county boundary changes in 1974. 14th January 2024.
