Fingal Beach, Cape Schanck, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. The Fingal Beaches lie on the western side of Cape Schanck. They can be reached along the walking tracks from Cape Schanck and Fingal Picnic Area car parks. The two beaches are remnants of a once large beach, that supplied sand to the backing cliff-top dunes. Today they have been eroded down to the present strip of sand, fronted by rock platforms and reefs. They are backed by the 40 m high calcarenite cliffs with the active dunes on top.Both beaches face south-west into the full force of the westerly winds and waves. The waves break on the offshore reefs and rocks; and the narrow beaches are only active at high tide.

Firá, the capitol of Santorini sits on top of, and hangs precariously at the edge of, steep cliffs, 300 m (984 ft) above the level of the sea. “Firá”, is actually a different pronunciation of “Thíra”, the ancient name of the island itself. in this view you can see both ways of getting up and down to the dock. The string of cable cars on the way down can be seen passing the other string on the way up. If you feel fit enough, you can use the zig-zag path from bottom to top. You can walk or you can ride one of the ponies which carry tourists up and down the cliff path from the dock at the base of the cliff. To give you an idea of scale, there are 12 cable cars, 6 going up and 6 going down. Each car hold 6 passengers.

Most people think of Portland Bill (Dorset, UK) as the quarry where all that stone that built London came from, or else the place with lighthouse at the end, but never a place with a beach. Tucked away beneath the cliffs about half way along the peninsula, lies Church Ope Cove - a secluded beach of large white pebbles (Portland Stone) and a few unglamorous beach huts. Half way up the path a turn takes you to the remains of the church - little more than a few gravestones, here completely hidden by the shrubbery. I painted this 20 inch x 30 inch picture in oils on board based on a photo I took late Spring 2016.
