The Detroit Wheels were an American football team, a charter member of the defunct World Football League. Soon after Gary Davidson announced the WFL's formation in October 1973, he was approached by a man named Bud Hucul about putting a team in Detroit. In a harbinger of things to come, however, it emerged that Hucul had a long history of legal problems, including 30 arrests and 27 lawsuits. A more credible offer came from a consortium of ten Detroit-area investors who were formally awarded a franchise on December 13, 1973. The group would eventually expand to 33 people, including singer Marvin Gaye, Motown Records vice-president Esther Gordy Edwards, Milford Fabricating owner Edward Nishon, and Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch.

The Arizona Outlaws were a professional American football team that played in the United States Football League in the mid-1980s. During their first season, the team played as the Oklahoma Outlaws. They became the Arizona Outlaws for their second season.

The Memphis Showboats were an American football franchise in the United States Football League. They entered the league in its expansion in 1984 and made the 1985 playoffs, losing in the semifinal round to the Oakland Invaders. Perhaps the most prominent players on the Showboats' roster during their two seasons of existence were future Pro Football Hall of Fame member Reggie White and future professional wrestler Lex Luger.

The Texarkana Titans were a professional American football team based in Texarkana, Texas. They began play in 1967 as a member of the Southern Football League and by 1968 joined the Texas Football League, and became a member of the Continental Football League when the former merged operations with it in 1969. After the Continental Football League dissolved in 1970, the Titans returned to an autonomous TFL. The Titans were just one of the four TFL franchises to remain in the league when it changed its name to the Trans-American Football League (TAFL) in late 1970 where they played for one season.

The Bulls were one of the seven teams assured of playing the 1986 USFL season, which would have been played in the autumn. The Bulls had bought the football assets of the Denver Gold during the offseason and were to take on much of that team's staff, including head coach Mouse Davis. The USFL itself was pursuing a large antitrust lawsuit against the NFL at the time; when they failed to secure a sizable judgment against the older league, the USFL suspended operations and eventually folded.

The Boston Sweepers was a team in the Atlantic Coast Football League. The team was owned by Ted Baron, who also owned a local trash disposal container company, hence the team name "sweepers". The team played from 1962 to 1964 in Boston before moving to New Bedford, Massachusetts and becoming the New Bedford Sweepers. The New Bedford Sweepers folded after the 1966 season. The Sweepers won two championships in the ACFL, 1964 and 1965.
