Many years ago, in childhood, my granny lived near here. In a brief flash of freedom I was allowed to explore the quiet, sleepy crescents that formed a block. The sun soaked into the sand coloured stone, turning it to gold. Railings marked the border of a magical, and alas, forbidden world of private gardens, an enchanted place of immaculate lawns and slopes. I felt the late afternoon sun on my skin, and the cooing of pigeons and fleeting music that murmured around me.

Saint Giles - His Bells by Charles Altamont Doyle features Doyle's perception of ghosts as personified memories brought back by the bells as they ring at midnight in the nocturnal sky above St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. His spectral picture of St. Giles exhibits a flow of ghosts haunting the city.

This riot of colour caught my eye and I decided I had to paint it, though even paint cannot do justice to the intense heat and glorious smell. The bush and flowers partially hide an Edinburgh terraced house, unaccustomed perhaps to the very warm weather. There is silence, but for the humming of bees.

St Giles' Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh, Scotland. With its famed crown spire it stands near the top of the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. A mysterious passage of light and shadow, thick solid stone, a greenish tint, gold tarnished perhaps. A cloister for gowned advocates perhaps, a place for ghostly footsteps by night, perhaps the very souls of the hanged and the damned in the heart of Edinburgh’s old town, or perhaps a reminder of a time when Scotland’s capital was the Athens of the north. I was fascinated by the neat shapes of light. I wanted to capture the moment. A lovely souvenir of Scotland. A great gift.

Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. The work is rich in colour and in detail, laced with a strong realism and solidity that make it a perfect souvenir of Scotland, an ideal gift.

The Dean Village sits quietly below the Dean Bridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith. It has always fascinated me, part Victorian and part Scottish Baronial, quiet, secluded, tranquil. A place for Christmas morning walks, for a cut through to Stockbridge and the haunted St Bernard’s Well. It is achingly pretty, quaint, and calming. This work is rich in heat, in colour and in detail.
