Aphrodite of Milos, better known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created sometime between 130 and 100 BC, the statue is believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty (Venus to the Romans). It is a marble sculpture, slightly larger than life size at 6 ft 8 in high. Part of an arm and the original plinth (the slab on which the statue rested) were lost following its discovery. From an inscription that was on its plinth, the statue is thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch. It is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Coming out of the tunnel of the underground cistern in Ancient Mycenae ("Mykines"), Argolis (Argolida), Peloponnese, Greece.

About 12 km (driving on a difficult dirt road) from famous Pyrgos village ("Capital of marble and marble sculptors) on the Northwest edge of Tinos island, I found two picturesque tiny villages, Koumelas (from where I enjoyed one of the most beautiful sunsets of my life, seeing both Tinos and Andros islands and the narrow sea zone that separates them ) and Mali, where this particular photo was taken. Both villages looked abandoned, but later friends from Pyrgos told me that some families go there during summer for quite vacations. These remote villages where really beautiful and there were also some excellent beaches around, so if you are thinking about real relaxation (without many comforts though) you should visit them. Plaka is the "capital" of Milos, the most beautiful village of the island, a real "Hora" of the Cyclades. Although it's located quite far from the sea, on the top of a hill, it has been for the last centuries the "base" of the Milian mariners. The seamen of Milos were considered the best "pilotoi" (=navigators) of the Mediterranean, and were payed very well to offer their services. The could take any ship, anywhere in the Mediterranean with excellent precision, in a time when the Radars and the GPS, were not even science fiction. So they chose to live much higher than sea level, so they could easily spot passing ships. The other reason they chose to live far from the sea, was to avoid pirates' attacks.
