Train

43106 is the only surviving example of an LMS Ivatt Class 4 Mogul (2-6-0 wheel arrangement). The locomotive was designed by H.G. Ivatt for medium freight work but was also used on passenger services. BR classified them as 4MT (MT for Mixed Traffic). This locomotive entered service in April 1951 and officially withdrawn from service in June 1968. 43106 can be seen on the Severn Valley Railway and is photographed here approaching Arley Station.

Post War, steam locomotives were aging and poorly maintained, hence the pre-war speeds were never attained. On the 23rd May 1959 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley set a post-war steam speed record of 112mph on Stoke Bank hauling a full passenger train. By the late 1950s, the age of steam traction was over and steam was being replaced by diesel power. Sir Nigel Gresley was withdrawn from service on 1st February 1966 and survives to this day in preservation.

Steam trains are always something incredible, for example the steam trains in the Isle of Man still running today are over 100 years old, built at the Gorton works in Manchester. These work horses go through some of the most scenic routes across the island, and with many people still using them for commuting to work. The Hooterville Cannonball is a fictional railroad train featured in Petticoat Junction, an American situation comedy that originally aired on CBS from 1963 to 1970. The train was considered an "important character" by the show's producers, and producer Paul Henning hired railroad historian Gerald M. Best to make sure that the locomotive sounds used on the show were authentic to a train of the same type and age. The 1890s-style train with a whimsical schedule gave the otherwise fanciful show a degree of authenticity; Henning said that "the train's weekly appearances on TV might set the space age back 50 years and drive train buffs insane with delight, but without it our show would lose its character image."
