Reflections in Burano

Lake Louise is often pictured in wide angle, showing off the waters of the lake itself as well as the mountains that tower above it. On this morning in mid-November, though, I felt like the reflection really stole the show. Much of the rest of the lake already had a fine sheen of ice over it, and only this one corner had open water to reflect the snowy peaks of Mount Victoria above. It was a nice last glimpse of the lake, which was shortly after buried in snow and will stay that way until the end of May!

The northern gannet is a fabulous seabird to watch as it dives vertically into the sea at speeds of up to 62 mph to feed on mackerel and herring. They thrive in large colonies located on cliffs overlooking the ocean or on small, elevated rock islands. This photograph was taken along the Atlantic seaboard in the gannet's non-breeding range.

Amazon Water Lilies, Victoria amazonica, in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden. It is a popular tourist attraction in Pamplemousses, near Port Louis, Mauritius, and the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. The plant has very large leaves, up to 3 m (10 ft) in diameter, that float on the water's surface on a submerged stalk, 7–8 m (23–26 ft) in length. It is the largest waterlily in the world.

The sandy bay at Cullercoats in the North East of England is enclosed by two small piers and was once a thriving fishing village in the early 1800s and is now home to the Dove Marine Laboratory and an RNLI Lifeboat station. This image was taken from the North end of the bay just as the sun was rising above the horizon on a cold January morning with frost still showing on the roof tops of the lifeboat station.

St Mary's Lighthouse and island lie north of the River Tyne and Whitley Bay on the North Sea coast of England. The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide when the causeway is not under water. The image was taken on a warm October morning shortly after sunrise with a lovely soft light illuminating the lighthouse and the sand ripples all under interesting cloud formations.

Lovely November sunrise with a golden glow to the sky as seen from the quayside on the River Blyth in Northumberland through the silhouetted rigging of the tall ship Williams II which is being restored to recreate an epic voyage to Antarctica when a Blyth born sea captain discovered the land mass in 1820.

It's not often that the North Sea is as calm as it was on this September morning, hardly a ripple under the cloudy blue sky. There is a small fishing boat just entering the harbour and its occupants must have been well pleased with the weather conditions.

Compulsion or being compelled to do something - is a very strange thing. I often think about the process of being a photographer... We see certain images and something within the shot which intrigues and compels... Quite often we don't know quite why... quite why that is... that we must 'first see the image', and then 'see the need to capture that image'... The great landscape photographer Ansel Adams often remarked on such a wonder... capturing his iconic wonderful depictions of the real world through the lens of a camera. For this moment, it was the intimate connection of being imbibed and totally immersed in nature at the top of a mountain and being in the presence of these beautiful mountain ponies by a druids circle.
