This narrative painting is partly allegorical, mainly autobiographical and echoes the poses of Guiseppe Cesari's Mannerist painting Expulsion of Adam and Eve. Inspired by an incident walking the dog in Bishopstoke woods, Hampshire, when an 80 year old Spitfire aircraft thunders overhead powered by its Merlin engines and soon after there is a brief hailstorm. Two cyclists dressed in tweeds on bespoke bicycles freewheel past a row of artificial trees, whilst a dog stops and stares.

Never was so much owed by so many to so few

The Whirlwind was a classic WW2 fighter that never fulfilled its true potential. This was the aircraft that was to replace the Spitfire after the initial batch were built because of its potentially lethal cannon armament. Sadly it was never to be, trouble with its ('safe option') Perigrine engines led to them being cancelled meaning little more than 100 of the aircraft were produced. It was proposed a mk would use 2 Merlins but there simply wasn't enough to go round and so the plane un updated went on to be a very effective low level bomber where it was still faster than most of the opposition even by the time they run out of airframes in 1943. When it was in prototype form in 1938 it was so fast indeed it gained the nickname 'CRICKEY'

The Rolls-Royce Merlin is a British liquid-cooled V-12 piston aero engine of 27-litre (1,650 cu in) capacity. Rolls-Royce designed the engine and first ran it in 1933 as a private venture. Initially known as the PV-12, it was later called Merlin following the company convention of naming its four-stroke piston aero engines after birds of prey. The engine benefitted from the racing experiences of precursor engines in the 1930s.

Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a Typhoon and Spitfire from RAF Coningsby flew together in a unique synchronised display during the 2015 display season. The Typhoon was painted with the 249 Squadron identification number of the only Fighter Command pilot awarded a Victoria Cross during the battle: Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson VC DFC.
