The team was named the Colt .45s after a "Name the Team" contest was won by William Irving Neder. The Colt .45 was well known as "the gun that won the west." The Houston Colt .45s entered the National League as an expansion team in 1962 along with the New York Mets. The current name, Astros, reflecting Houston's role as the host of the Johnson Space Center, was adopted three years later, when they moved into the Astrodome, the first-ever domed sports stadium and the so-called "Eighth Wonder of the World"

On September 27, 1964 the Colt . 45s played their last game at Colt Stadium against the Los Angeles Dodgers. On December 1, 1964, Hofheinz announced the team would be rechristened as the Houston Astros, wanting to avoid having to possibly pay the Colt Firearms Company a share of the profits due to the Colt . 45 name. In 1965, the Colts . 45s were renamed the Astros and moved across the parking lot into the Astrodome.

The Memphis Blues were a Minor League Baseball team that played in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1968 to 1976. They competed in the Double-A Texas League from 1968 to 1973 as an affiliate of the New York Mets. Memphis transferred to the Triple-A International League in 1974, where they were affiliated with the Montreal Expos from 1974 to 1975 and Houston Astros in 1976. Their home games were played at Blues Stadium.
