Orange Bellied Parrots are rare and endangered, so I was thrilled to get this shot in the Fighting Extinction Aviary at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia. They are part of a captive breeding program to to save this beautiful species.

The Taggerty Cascades are on the Taggerty River, about 14kms (almost 9 miles) above Marysville in the Victorian Alps. Access is by a twisty, dirt road, then a steep walking track. The photos made it worthwhile though!

These Helmet Orchids are really tiny - and very hard to find! I was shown where a small patch of them was growing - what a privilege! This one is a Veined Helmet Orchid (Corybas Diemenicus) and was less than a centimetre tall.

2015 update this is another old shot I'm keeping for two reasons 1) I was walking to the station and lo and behold a dream opportunity. Overcast sky but not no overcast. Beautiful butterfly on greenery. Flat footpath to balance on without tripod! Perhaps I could have cropped this some more but I think the greenery enhances the blue and black pattern on the wings? 2) Due to pollution its getting harder and harder to spot butterflies of ANY species even in Suburban Sydney ! This species is now rare !

Australian Birds - Illustrated

More twin Wax Lips! These lovely orchids are usually one flower to a stem, but sometimes 2 grow so close together they become twins. Their botanical name is Glossodia Major - and they are sometimes known as Parson In The Pulpit.

Often confused with Donkey Orchids, the Leopard Orchid (Diuris Pardina) is smaller with smaller - and rounder sepals. Another Victorian Spring treasure!

Ear Sundews (Drosera Auriculata) are quite difficult to photograph, as they have a long slender stem with a single pink flower on the end. This makes it difficult to include the sticky "ears", with which they catch insects, and the flower. I was lucky to find this twisted specimen, with a vey pretty flower.

Don't you feel foolish when a bird laughs at you? Specially when you can't see the joke! The Kookaburras live in the trees around Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria, Australia - and regularly entertain the visitors.

Chamaescilla Corymbosa - Blue Stars - usually appear on the first warm day of Spring. This usually happens in October. Took this little beauty on 24th Sept. on a cold, but very still day. Must be something to do with global warming! Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve, Victoria, Australia.
