Gorgeous reflections of summer on the Bow River in Banff. Who would have thought that only weeks before this river was in flood?

Even though the moon disappeared behind Mount Fairview, the view across Lake Louise on this night was just unreal. The full moon lit up swirling clouds at the end of the lake as its turquoise waters lapped at the rocks at our feet -- and the best thing was, our group was one of the few to witness it after the daytime crowds disappeared completely at sunset. To get the full effect of the moving clouds, I shot for 3 minutes; hence the faint star trails you can see above.

On Tuesday morning, I was lucky enough to make it to the Moraine Lake Road entrance just after the road was opened for the season. I arrived at the lake to find I was only the third car parked in the parking lot! It was fantastic exploring around the Rockpile in the wintry conditions, and it proved that Moraine Lake is well worth visiting even when the water isn't shining brightly blue like it does later in the summer!

I made two trips to Jasper in September, and on both trips, I needed to be in Jasper at a certain time so I wasn't able to dawdle along the Icefields Parkway like I usually do. It's a travesty to drive the Parkway without stopping though, and I found that on both trips, I made one photo stop: at Mount Chephren and the Waterfowl Lakes. Both times presented me with completely different scenes; the first was a smoky sunset, and the second was this gorgeous, foggy scene just after sunrise.

Can you see the person standing on the edge and enjoying the view? He's so hard to pick in the seemingly never-ending landscape of trees and mountains stretching out beyond the Bow Summit. I never get sick of this lookout because it seems to change every time I visit -- in the time I've lived in Canada, the lake has morphed from milky green to blue to white!

Wow. There are some places that take the words right out of your mouth, and Moraine Lake is one of them. The Valley of the Ten Peaks may be one of the most crowded places in the Rockies, but a visit there is so worth it -- particularly if you get there early enough to see the lake look like glass, reflecting the mountains and the sky above.

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day to take the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain. The mountains of Banff National Park stretched as far as we could see!

I'd driven past Herbert Lake a number of times on windy days where the lake was rough, but on this morning, all was still and it was absolutely perfect. I called it Herbert Lake's Last Hurrah because this was only days before all the lakes in Banff National Park began to freeze; on my next visit two weeks later, it was frozen solid!

The Ten Peaks reflected in a perfectly calm Moraine Lake early on an autumn morning. Even though the crowds were already building, it was still possible to find a piece of the lakeshore for myself and just soak in the serenity of it all.

Clouds scatter above the Ten Peaks on a perfectly still September morning in the Rockies. Despite the crowds that flock here in September to see the autumn colours in the nearby Larch Valley, I still can't think of a better place to start the morning.

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise looking like it's part of a (very wintry) fairytale. November really is perfect for photos in the Rockies, with a gorgeous layer of snow over everything except the streams, which still babble over the rocks.

There are so many stunning places to hike in Banff in summer, but if you're looking for the most sweeping view with the least walking, the top of Sulphur Mountain is definitely your best option. A quick gondola ride and a kilometre of walking along the boardwalk gets you this amazing view up the Bow River!

From about halfway up the C-Level Cirque track on the side of Banff's Cascade Mountain, we found a lookout with my favourite view of the day. While Lake Minnewanka is gorgeous to visit, its waters are often rough; this angle smoothed them out as well as showing just how large the lake really is!

A number of hardy souls braving the 20º temperatures and wind gusts full of snow on the boardwalk between the Banff Gondola and Sanson's Peak. Sure, we all could have stayed inside at one of the new cafes in the gondola terminus, but with views like this - complete with trees and mountains freshly coated in snow -- there was no way I was staying inside!

What a view! After plenty of fresh snow in the days leading up to Christmas, Sulphur Mountain was looking frosted and gorgeous on Boxing Day, even if we did have to brave -20ºC temperatures and snow being whipped uphill by the wicked winds to get to this lookout! The wind was strong enough that you can even see which direction it was going from the trees in this photo.

When the conditions report at the bottom of the gondola read "extreme conditions," we took it as a bit of a challenge. Despite the wind whipping snow up the side of the mountain and trying to sand our faces off, it was worth it for views like these.

The Canadian Rockies stretching as far as we could see in every direction, from Banff town on the far right all the way across the national park. The view from the top of the gondola was worth every penny!

I knew the view from the top of the Banff Gondola was supposed to be good, but I didn't realise quite how good it was until we went up on a picture-perfect day. Given our other two days in Banff alternated between clouds and storms, I think we timed it quite well!

I headed out from Cave & Basin with a small group of fellow hikers on an overcast morning, but by the time we made it to this spot on the Bow River, the weather had turned. The river was calm, Cascade Mountain was white with fresh snow, and the sun was warm. Perfection!

When we passed 7,000ft on our way uphill to the Larch Valley, the green pine trees started to give way to the gold of larches. The view of them stretching into the distance with the mountains behind was something else!

What a sunrise! Just when we thought the colours had left the sky -- the clouds had already faded from pink back to a faint blue hue -- they exploded again. It was the last sunrise of 2016, and of all the sunrises I witnessed at this spot during the year, it was definitely the best.

On this morning on the last day of 2016, it really did feel like the calm between the storms. Snow from the previous day had cleared, leaving us clear blue skies for sunrise; thirty minutes later, as the sun began to peek out from behind Mount Rundle, the snow clouds were beginning to set in again. On a larger scale, it was also the calm between the crazy year that was 2016 and the inevitable craziness that would follow in 2017.
