Remembering the great Abraham & Straus Department Store. Officially Abraham & Straus but everybody just called it A & S. They had a number of different logos over the years but this is my favorite. The company's 841,000-square-foot Brooklyn flagship store was located at 422 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. In 2003, the Brooklyn Heights Association and the Municipal Art Society put the building on a list of 28 historic buildings in downtown Brooklyn that needed to be protected.

Montreal-based Le Chateau shut its operations in Canada which includes 123 storefronts as well as an e-commerce site. The 60 year old retailer says that it spent much of the pandemic trying to refinance or sell the business which was ultimately unsuccessful.

Remembering the classy Bullock’s Department Store. Bullock's was a chain of full-line department stores from 1907 through 1995, headquartered in Los Angeles, growing to operate across California, Arizona and Nevada. Bullock's also operated as many as seven more upscale Bullocks Wilshire specialty department stores stores across Southern California.

Garfinckel's was a prominent department store chain based in  Washington, D.C. that catered to a clientele of wealthy consumers. Garfinckel’s carved out a unique, high-end niche and held on to it for 85 years, cultivating generations of dedicated shoppers who depended on the store for the trendiest and classiest apparel. When Garfinckel's closed in 1990, it was a heart-wrenching experience for employees and customers alike. Its flagship store at 14th and F in the city's F Street shopping district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Remembering Younkers Department Store. Younkers was adepartment store chain founded as a family-run dry goods business in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa. In 1899 the Younker brothers' main store in downtown Des Moines was moved to 7th and Walnut Streets, and it operated at the same location for 106 years before closing on August 12, 2005. The downtown Des Moines store became known for its Tea Room restaurant, which opened in 1913 and closed shortly before the store did. It also installed Iowa's first escalator, known as the "electric stairs," in 1939.

Remembering the great Filene’s Department Store with their 1960's logo. Filene's was an American department store chain founded by William Filene in 1881. The former Filene's flagship store at Downtown Crossing in Boston is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The success of the original full-line store in Boston, Massachusetts was supplemented by its off-price sister store Filene's Basement in 1908. Filene’s Basement became a much-visited tourist attraction. Starting in 1947, the Boston flagship store held an annual one-day bridal gown sale which was dubbed The Running of the Brides.

Bullocks Wilshire was the name of an upscale department store chain. The Los Angeles store was the flagship; it had seven stores total. Bullocks Wilshire, located at 3050 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, is a 230,000-square-foot (21,000 m2) Art Deco building. The building opened in September 1929 as a luxury department store for owner John G. Bullock (owner of the more mainstream Bullock's in Downtown Los Angeles).

Remembering Meier & Frank Department Stores. Meier & Frank was a prominent chain of department stores founded in Portland, Oregon, operating in the Pacific Northwest from 1857 to 2006. For a time, Meier & Frank reigned as the largest retail outlet west of the Mississippi and one of the largest stores in the nation in the early 1930s. It was considered as one of America’s great stores. Meier & Frank pioneered the concept of a "money-back guarantee", until then unheard-of in merchandising. Clark Gable worked at Meier & Frank selling neckties.

Remembering Buffums Department Store in Long Beach. California. Buffums, originally written as Buffums' with an apostrophe, was a chain of upscale department stores. Buffums had a large downtown store, and starting in the 1950s, slowly grew to be a small regional chain of 16 speciality department stores across Southern California. Over the years, the stores gained a reputation as the “Grand Dame” of department stores in the area. The stores’ interiors were known for large chandeliers and other upscale touches. The chain marketed itself as “Buffums Specialty Store,” in an attempt to differentiate itself from other local chains.  Its most famous advertising line was “I’ve been to Buffums.”

Remembering Hecht’s Department Store. Washington DC and Baltimore Maryland. Hecht's was a large chain of department stores that operated mainly in the mid-Atlantic area. The firm originated in Baltimore in 1860. And then in 1896 Hecht’s opened a store in Washington DC, which eventually moved to a grand glass and marble store at the corner of 7th and F Streets Northwest in 1925. By 2005, Hecht's had some 81 stores in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The family-owned business made customers a top priority and believed in a personalized shopping experience.

Remembering L. S. Ayres Department Store. L. S. Ayres and Company was based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and founded in 1872 by Lyman S. Ayres. Over the years its Indianapolis flagship store, which opened in 1905 and was later enlarged, became known for its women's fashions, the Tea Room, holiday events and displays, and the basement budget store. A long-time Ayres slogan, "That Ayres Look", promoted the company as a fashion leader, and by 1972 it had become the oldest continuous retail slogan in the United States.

Future Shop was a Canadian electronics store chain. In 2013, the company operated 139 locations across Canada. In 2015, Best Buy announced the dissolution of the Future Shop brand and the closure of 66 of its locations. All remaining locations were converted to Best Buy stores.

Woodward's Stores Ltd. was a department store chain that operated in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, for 101 years, before its sale to the Hudson's Bay Company. Woodward's was a central feature of the retail scene in southwestern British Columbia for much of the twentieth century. The chain was distinctive in that stores included a large supermarket known as the "Food Floor".

Pay 'n Save was a retail company founded by Monte Lafayette Bean in Seattle, Washington, in 1940. Over the years, Pay 'n Save was the leading drugstore chain in Washington and was the owner of several Washington-based retailers, including Lamonts and Ernst.

A&A Records was a Canadian record store chain. Prior to the expansion of Sam the Record Man in the early 1960s, A&A was the dominant record store chain in Canada. It was acquired by CBS Records after it lost the dominant market position to the Sam's chain, but was reacquired by a Toronto investment group in 1981. After an ill-advised attempt to rapidly expand their scope of operations in the late 1980s and early 90s, A&A Records filed for bankruptcy in 1993, shutting down all stores.

Remembering the wonderful Hess Department Store. Hess's was a department store chain based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The company started in 1897 with one store, originally known as Hess Brothers, and grew to nearly 80 stores by its peak in the late 1980s.  It was a shopping mecca known around the world for its quality merchandise. The store's motto was "be best, be first, be entertaining". The Patio, the store's restaurant, was renowned for its famous strawberry pie.
