Great Western Railway locomotive number 6960 'Raveningham Hall' awaits its next task at Minehead station, end of the line on the West Somerset Railway (WSR). This locomotive (one of the Great Western's 'Hall Class' of engines) is named after a country estate and stately home in Norfolk. The 4-6-0 coal-fired Hall class engines were designed by Charles Collett and were used for mixed traffic operations between 1928 and 1965. Of the 259 built, Raveningham Hall is one of just seven preserved locos of its type. It was built in 1944 at the GWR's Swindon works and remained in service until 1964, when it was sold for scrap. Ex GWR Large Prairie engine 5199 spent most of its working life in the Birmingham area based at Tyseley from 1934 to 49. It is photographed here in the Forest of Dean, visiting from the Llangollen Railway. The image depicts the engine as she would have worked, pulling a local passenger service on a branch line.

Great Western Railway saddle tank 1340 Trojan at the Didcot Rail Centre, Oxfordshire. This locomotive was built by the Avonside Engine Company in 1897, largely seeing service in the South Wales docks. It was finally sold to a Midlands colliery before finishing its working life. It has now been fully restored by the Didcot Rail Centre and can be seen here on the traverser in front of the engine sheds building up a head of steam in preparation for shunting duties.

Locomotive #1213 - Vale of Rheidol Railway, February 2020 The narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol railway runs from the West Wales coastal town of Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, climbing 700 feet along its 12 mile route. Locomotive number 1213, shown here at Devil's Bridge station, is one of three 2-6-2 steam-driven tank locomotives used on the line. All three currently carry the historic Great Western livery that they were originally delivered in. Built in Swindon in the 1920s/30s, each engine weighs 25 tons and is more than 8 feet wide (despite the track gauge being just under 2 feet). Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Engine 2857 was built in Swindon in 1918 and was in service until 1963. This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!

A digital art image of Castle Class locomotive 'Pendennis Castle' waiting at a country station. This is a locomotive with a prodigious history. It left the Great Western Railway's Swindon works in 1924 and in 1925 successfully took part in trials against the A4 Pacifics on the LNER between Kings Cross and Doncaster. In 1925 it was exhibited in the British Empire Exhibition as the most powerful express locomotive. It was finally withdrawn from service in 1964 and is now preserved at Didcot.

With 863 built, they were the most prolific class of the GWR, and one of the most numerous classes of British steam locomotive.
