Corvid is the scientific family name for crows, ravens, jays, etc. I'm a fan of these intelligent birds, and when the pandemic started to hit the news,I kept misreading reading Covid-19 as CORVID-19. Dumb me. Anyway, I couldn't get it out of my head and this drawing idea kept coming back to me, especially since those Dark Ages plague doctor masks resemble crows so much.

Originally an ink drawing, this is one of many Amabie's drawn during our pandemic. Amabie first appeared in Japanese in the 1800's. At the time Amabie said “If an epidemic occurs, draw a picture of me and show it to everyone.” A tee shirt seems the perfect vehicle for this! Amabie is described as a mermaid-like creature with long hair, a beak and 3 legs. Amabie is categorized as a yokai in the Japanese mythical tradition. This is my interpretation of Amabie, she looks good with a plague doctor's mask!

In the South Lagoon between Venice and Lido sits the small Italian island of Poveglia that for centuries has been a refuge, stronghold, place of exile and a dumping ground for the diseased, dying and deceased. In 1348 the Bubonic Plague arrived in Venice and Poveglia, like many other small islands, became a quarantine colony. In the late 1800s, the area's mentally ill resided in an asylum in Poveglia. The asylum was poorly constructed and was used as a place of exile rather than rehabilitation.
