Manned maneuvring unit space walk, 1984. Astronaut Bruce McCandless floats free above the Earth in his manned manoeuvring unit (MMU) on 7th February 1984, during the 10th space shuttle flight (mission 41B). McCandless, who helped design the MMU, was the first person to fly it, thus becoming the first "human satellite" in orbit around the Earth. The MMU is propelled by small nitrogen thrusters which are controlled by the astronaut's hands. Because no umbilical cord attaches the astronaut to the spacecraft, it gives much greater mobility than was available to earlier spacewalkers. Mission 41B was launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on 3rd February 1984, and landed back at KSC on 12th February.

Mercury-Atlas 6 (MA-6) was the first crewed American orbital spaceflight, which took place on February 20, 1962. Piloted by astronaut John Glenn and operated by NASA as part of Project Mercury, it was the fifth human spaceflight, preceded by Soviet orbital flights Vostok 1 and 2 and American sub-orbital flights Mercury-Redstone 3 and 4. The Mercury spacecraft, named Friendship 7, was carried to orbit by an Atlas LV-3B launch vehicle lifting off from Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

SpaceX Demonstration Mission 1 on the launchpad at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. The Dragon 2 capsule (left) is mounted aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, with the gangway arm extended from the launch tower to the capsule. This mission will be the first orbital test of the Dragon 2 spacecraft, scheduled for launch on March 2, 2019. Dragon 2 is a class of reusable spacecraft in development by American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX. The mission will test the approach and automated docking procedures with the International Space Station (ISS). The capsule will remain docked for a few weeks, then conduct re-entry, splashdown and recovery steps to test the craft for flights transporting humans to the ISS.

Exploring the Moon: astronaut Duke stands next to Crater Plum during the first excursion of the Apollo 16 mission. Duke is seen holding a bore sampling implement, used to take vertical profile samples of the lunar soil. On the far side of the 30 metre wide crater is the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). Astronauts Duke and Young landed in the Descartes region of the Moon on 21 April 1972. During their 71 hour visit, they made three excursions on the surface totalling 20 hours 14 minutes, covering 26 kilometres in the LRV. After blasting off from the Moon, they rejoined astronaut Mattingly in the Command and Service Module, returning to Earth on 27 April 1972.

This was the second manned Apollo mission and the first to be launched by a Saturn V rocket. The crew flew to the Moon and orbited it 10 times before returning to Earth on 27 December.

First Space Shuttle launch, 12th April 1981. This launch, of Columbia, was the first ever launch of a Space Shuttle. The US astronauts on board were John Young and Robert Crippen, and the mission number was STS-1. The take-off took place from Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. The mission lasted for 54 hours, and touch-down was at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger (mission 51-L) seventy-three seconds after lift- off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 28th January 1986. All seven crew members were killed. It is thought that O-rings in a seal on the right hand solid rocket booster failed, due to the extremely cold weather conditions experienced just prior to the launch. The subsequent leak of fuel resulted in the explosion.

Apollo 14 was the third successful U.S. moon landing mission.

Apollo 16 had a couple display malfunctions as well as some telemetry problems that forced the mission to be shortened by one day.

Apollo 11 carried three astronauts to the moon with a mission of landing on the moon. This mission was carried out on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon.

Apollo 12 landed on the moon and began taking lunar samples as well as leaving scientific equipment to measure seismic activity and engineering data over a long period of time.
