Everyone loves to ride the rails especially on a steam train.

A black and white image of Hall class locomotive 6990 Witherslack Hall on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway near Gothland, home of the TV series Heartbeat. Witherslack Hall was built by British Railways to a GWR design in 1948 and withdrawn in 1966.

Minimalistic Steam Railway Design

THE LOCOMOTIVE.

A jewel of Lancaster County Pennsylvania, the Strasburg Railroad has been operating as a tourist train since 1958. Locomotive 90 is a 2-10-0 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1924 for the Great Western Railway of Colorado. It was purchased by Strasburg in 1967.

Side tank locomotive Metropolitan 1 visiting the Great Western Railway Centre at Didcot. This locomotive was built for the Metropolitan line and originally worked on both its overground and underground lines. In 2013 it once again hauled passengers between Olympia and Moorgate as part of the 150th anniversary of the London Underground railway.

The word locomotive originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", and the Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion". Besides that, they're cool. See Locomotive-2 for another version.

A collection of Sir Nigel Gresley designed record breakers. Flying Scotsman LNER number 4472 became the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at a speed of 100 MPH in 1934. Silver Link LNER number 2509 the first steam locomotive to record 112 MPH in 1935. Mallard LNER number 4468 is the holder of the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph in 1938 and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley set a post-war steam speed record of 112mph in 1959.

Here we have a photograph of British Railways Standard Class 4MT steam locomotive number 76079 photographed in the autumn on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with a rake of British Rail red coaches. This class of locomotive was designed for mixed traffic and would have been seen pulling either freight or passenger coaches.

Great Western Railway pannier tank locomotive 3738 building up a head of steam before starting work at the Didcot Rail Centre. This engine, one of the 57xx class, was built at the GWR Swindon works in 1937 and saw service at the Old Oak Common depot. After eventually being sold for scrap, it was rescued by the Great Western Society and restored to full working order. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200
