This was a photo I took of an orchid that looked rather mundane. I decided to make it into what I thought it should be.

Simply translated, it means “simple life” or “pure life”, but here in Costa Rica, it is more than just a saying—it is a way of life.

A real gem of the forest; the very pretty female Purple-throated mountaingem hummingbird at a feeder, Costa Rica. The female is less than 10cm long (tip of the beak to tip of the tail) and weighs only 4.8 g. Female Purple-throated Mountaingem Hummingbird, Lampornis calolaemus. This bird inhabits forested areas in hilly terrain, and is found at altitudes from 800 to 2,500 m. Photographed at La Savegre National Park, Costa Rica. Due to habitat degredation, people are encouraged to put out nectar feders for hummingbirds, particularly for those which migrate to and from South and Central America to the United Sates. Growing in the Casa Orquideas Botanical Gardens which is one of the oldest and most interesting botanical gardens in the Golfo Dulce region of Costa Rica. The gardens include hundreds of different species of tropical plants such as palms, heliconias, orchids, exotic fruit trees, and much more. Canon 6D, zoom lens. (Featured in Cover Shots.)

An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of another plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, or from debris accumulating around it. It sometimes grows on fallen logs. It is not a parasite. What looks like a colourful flower are bracts which protect its very small flowers. Canon 6D, zoom lens. This is a 3D rendering of the phrase "Pura Vida" in bold, blue letters. "Pura Vida" is a Costa Rican expression that means "pure life" and is used to describe a laid-back, happy lifestyle.
