A family day out to Seaham, County Durham Northeast England and taking the opportunity to capture a few shots of the low, rolling clouds across the North Sea - This one is of Glass Beach, with my wife looking across the bay from the Featherbed Rocks outcrop to Sunderland in the distance

The partly frozen Derwent Reservoir, located in County Durham, close to the border of Northumberland and the villages of Edmunbyers and Blanchlands in the respective counties.

The Hisehope Reservoir, is the smallest of a group of three reservoirs located on Muggleswick Common, County Durham. The reservoir was opened in 1906. All three reservoirs are located across the Muggleswick, Stanhope and Edmunbyers Commons and the Blanchland Moor, which form part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. High Force is probably one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. The River Tees plunges some 22 metres (71feet) from Whinn Sill as it flows through Upper Teesdale. Not the highest waterfall in England, but most certainly the one that has the largest volume of water in a single drop.

Penshaw Monument in the distance stands on the highest point of the area and can been seen for miles around. Famous in its location, it also appears on the badge of Sunderland Football Club.

The beach which sits, south of Seaham, is named after the Seaham Chemical Works which occupied the immediate cliff top for a short time. It was established in the 1860s, by the 1890s it had gone. But Chemical Beach continued to be abused. The sand was extensively removed by the Seaham and Londonderry Bottle Works to make glass and coal waste from the Dawdon Pit was dumped into the sea. The beach and cliff top have been cleaned up. Natural is recovering. The magnesian limestone provides a rare habitat for flora and butterflies and is under the protection of the National Trust.

A surprisingly unnamed magnesian limestone sea stack on the Durham coast. The beach on which it sits, south of Seaham, is named after the Seaham Chemical Works which occupied the immediate cliff top for a short time. It was established in the 1860s, by the 1890s it had gone. But Chemical Beach continued to be abused. The sand was extensively removed by the Seaham and Londonderry Bottle Works to make glass and coal waste from the Dawdon Pit was dumped into the sea. The beach and cliff top have been cleaned up. Natural is recovering. The magnesian limestone provides a rare habitat for flora and butterflies and is under the protection of the National Trust.

The locally named Chemical Beach at Seaham Harbour on the County Durham Coast of northern England is named after the old chemical works that was located close to the cliffs in the 1800's. The waste from the works ran in pipes to the sea where is was disgorged. Over the years, much work has been carried out to create clean beaches. However, signs of the old damage persist. The area can produce almost alien looking images at both sunrise and sunset.

The marina at Seaham Harbour was once home to a multitude of local fishing vehicles, landing their catch daily and selling it along the dockside. Over the years, as fishing declined, the docks and harbour changed. Now with new marina gates protecting the leisure craft, the marina is home to local boat owners. The area now includes busy cafes and shops, along with the Lifeboat Heritage Centre. Here the image show dawn breaking over the marina.

The old Chemical beach of Seaham harbour, so named for the period that the chemical works were situated on the cliffs above the beach. Once the chemical waste was piped directly into the Seaham and other waste was carried along the beach on small rail carts - now all that remains are the remnants of the tracks and some old wagon wheels in the sea. Seaham Harbour is a small town on the County Durham coast of England. Once a very busy harbour shipping out coal, glass and local fishing boats bringing in fish, crabs and lobster. Now though, the harbour is much less busy. The beaches, were once very busy in the summer with locals making the most of the sandy areas, though now, like the harbour they are much quieter. here the sunrise is seen over the groin towards the old Featherbed Rock.

Sun rising over the Old Chemical Beach, located on the north east coast of England, slightly south of Seaham Harbour. The name was given to the area during the times of the old chemical works that are situated on the cliff tops. The area still shows the remnants of the industrial heritage.

Some places make it easy to relax and take a deep breath. Tunstall Reservoir in the North Pennines is one of those, especially if you're a fisherman too. Located close to the towns of Stanhope and Walsingham in County Durham it's now used solely to maintain minimum regulatory flows on the River Wear in northeast England. The peace and quiet are priceless.

The old Chemical Beach located at Seaham Harbour on the North East Coast of England. Once a thriving mining and chemical industry used the sea as a dumping ground for waste products. The landscape on the seashore was altered giving an almost alien appearance - and has been used for movie scenes in the film Alien. The colouring with the full moon has been used to enhance the otherworldly image. Canon 5D Mkiii 24-105 L-Series Lens

The remains of a capstan winch at the abandoned Sikehead Lead Mine located at Burnhope, County Durham. The winch stands at the top of the Ellen shaft where lead was hauled from the mine.

A lone pine growing on Burnhope Moor, County Durham, close to the border with Northumberland. Standing on the moor the countryside view stretches unbroken for miles, across Durham, towards both Northumberland and Cumbria

Cow Green Reservoir, is located just inside County Durham, close to Upper Teesdale and the Cumbrian border. The water from the reservoir is used to feed the River Tees. Here the water is being released from the dam and rushes towards the Cauldron Snout waterfall, before flowing onwards to the waterfalls of High Force and Low Force.

On top of Penshaw Hill sits the Earl of Durham's Monument. Better known as the Penshaw Monument, this 70 foot high folly is a replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and can be seen for miles around. It is considered to be Wearside's most beloved landmark, even appearing on the badge of Sunderland Football Club. This eerie image taken after sunset shows the steep path leading to the monument which was bathed in a purple light.
