The Marines franchise began in 1950 as the Mainichi Orions, an inaugural member of the Pacific League. The Orions were named after the constellation of the same name. The Marines won the inaugural Japan Series in 1950. In 1958, the team was merged with the Daiei Unions and renamed the Daimai Orions. In 1964 they became the Tokyo Orions, and the Lotte Orions in 1969. The franchise was slow to replicate its initial success: the Orions made the Japan Series in 1960 and 1970, only to lose both years.

The Hammond Pros from Hammond, Indiana played in the National Football League from 1920 to 1926 as a traveling team. The Pros were established by local businessman Paul Parduhn and Dr. Alva Young. Young, a boxing promoter and owner of a racing stable, also served as doctor/trainer (and part-owner) for a semi-pro football team operated by the Hammond Clabby Athletic Association from 1915 to 1917. In 1918, Young presided over a new team known as the "Hammond All-Stars" and played against many of the teams that would form the backbone of the American Professional Football Association (including the Racine Cardinals, Detroit Heralds, Rock Island Independents, Minneapolis Marines, Cleveland Tigers, Canton Bulldogs, and Toledo Maroons).

The Tacoma Daisies were a Minor League Baseball team that played in the Pacific Northwest League. They were based in Tacoma, Washington and played in Tacoma Baseball Park. The Daisies were active for three seasons, winning the league championship in 1892. In July 1890, the Daisies agreed to allow Sunday games because of poor attendance.

The Muncie Flyers, known as the Congerville Flyers for most of their existence, were a professional American football team from Muncie, Indiana, that played from 1905 to 1926. The Flyers were an independent squad for most of their existence, but are remembered mostly for their very brief stint in the American Professional Football Association (later known as the National Football League). With only three official league games, one in 1920 and two in 1921, the Flyers are the third-shortest-lived team in league history, behind the two games of the original New York Giants and the one game of the Tonawanda Kardex Lumbermen, and the shortest by a team not from the state of New York.

The California Sunshine was an American soccer club based in Fountain Valley, California that was a member of the American Soccer League. The team was owned by Dr. Robert Everakes and his wife Alexandra, who was the general manager. Their home games were held at Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa, California and at El Camino Community College in Torrance, California but had exhibition games at the University of California in Riverside, California and Palm Springs Stadium in Palm Springs, California. Their first season was 1977, but the team folded in 1981 after four seasons. The head coach was Derek Lawther.

The Bangor Lumberjacks were the second of two failed attempts to establish low-level professional baseball in (or at least “near”) Bangor, Maine during the independent baseball boom of the 1990’s and early 21st century. Both the Lumberjacks and their predecessor, the Bangor Blue Ox (1996-1997), had a brand identity closely connected to Paul Bunyan folklore. Founded by Herman Steinlauf in 1916 as a music store, Herman’s World of Sporting Goods was a large chain of sporting goods stores in the United States. At one time, there was a gentleman’s agreement with west coast competitor, Oshman’s Sporting Goods, that the Herman’s chain would stay east of the Mississippi, while Oshman’s would be dominant on the west coast. Later on, Herman’s did expand west with the acquisition of Salt Lake City-based Sunset Sports Centers, although this was short-lived. By 1992, Herman’s had 259 stores in 35 states, but the entered into bankruptcy in 1993, first closing stores in the New York metropolitan area, then the New York City stores.

The Albuquerque Geckos were a short-lived lower-division pro soccer club during the late 1990’s. The Geckos were part of the sprawling United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues, joining the USISL’s 39-team nationwide D3 Pro League as an expansion club in 1997. The Geckos replaced the USISL’s recently folded New Mexico Chiles club in the Albuquerque market. Rod Underwood, the Chiles’ head coach from 1996, was hired to lead the Geckos in 1997.

The Chicago Stags were a National Basketball Association team based in Chicago from 1946 to 1950. In the BAA's inaugural year, the Chicago Stags were placed in the Western Division, and after 60 games were tied with the St. Louis Bombers at 38–22 each. A tiebreaker game between the two teams on March 31, 1947, resulted in the Stags defeating the Bombers in overtime, 73–66, to clinch the division and a first round bye. Under the initial playoff format, the two division champions faced each other in the Semifinals.

The Nishi Nippon Pirates were a former Nippon Professional Baseball team and a founding member of the Central League in 1950. The team was owned by the Nishinippon Shimbun and played their home games in Heiwadai Stadium in Fukuoka. After only one season in which they fell victim to the first perfect game in professional Japanese baseball history, had financial and managerial problems, and finished in sixth place, the Pirates merged with the other Fukuoka-based Nishitetsu Clippers to form the Nishitetsu Lions in the Pacific League.

The Virginia Squires was a basketball team based in Norfolk, Virginia, and playing in several other Virginia cities. They were members of the American Basketball Association from 1970 to 1976. The team originated in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, an ABA charter franchise based in Oakland, California. They moved to Washington, D.C. as the Washington Caps in 1969 but moved to Norfolk the following year, becoming the Squires.
