This was one very busy Roadrunner, running back and forth chasing and catching insects. Most every time we visit this state park, we see Greater Roadrunners yet Cornell Lab Merlin app lists them as uncommon. Morning with the Egrets Black and White by Debra Martz Egrets can often be found fishing from the manmade penisulas at the bottom of the spillway. There is one on the south and one on the north bank below the spillway which narrows the flow into the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River. It is April and it is breeding season. Most birds change colors in plumage during this season or get additional features. The American White Pelicans grow a plate on the top of their massive bills and the colors of the bill become much more vibrant. There I was, trying to walk very quietly through all the fallen leaves on the trail so I wouldn't scare off any of the birds or waterfowl. I didn't even make it to the bird blind before this large group of ducks took to the air and then landed again further back in the marshy field. At first I thought it was all Mallards but then noticed several Green-winged Teals were in the Duck Rush, too. Fort Union served as the headquarters of the 8th Cavalry in the early 1870s and as the headquarters of the 9th Cavalry in the late 1870s during the Apache Wars The 8th was actively engaged in trying to control various Native American tribes and bands in Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in the Indian Wars between 1867 and 1888.

The water was not moving, it was all frozen in place. Waterfowl looking for open water of which there was a small area back by the spillway on both sides. The birds in flight are mostly Common Mergansers, Northern Pintails and a few seagulls. February was brutally cold with several weeks below freezing dipping as low as -14. Once the weather and roads improved I made the drive to the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma for a bird watching day. Migrating Turkey Vultures by Debra Martz Not olny do large numbers of Pelicans, Cormorants, Blue Jays, Gulls and Ducks arrive during fall migration, so do large numbers of Vultures. There is an auto tour drive through a portion of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge with a number of marshes along the way. Several pullouts allow you to stop and view. Normally are more waterfowl at this area in the winter but today only two American Coots that turned and swam away. This area is located between Intermediate Marsh and Mink Run Marsh.
