I Love Rowing

When visiting Bayfield in the autumn, it always an excuse to get out and take some pictures of the fall colours. A short distance from our cottage is Pioneer Park, which overlooks Lake Huron. There's a lovely row of maple trees by the park. It's difficult not to like this image.

I often take a walk to the end of the pier at Bayfield, There's often a group of fishermen there trying their luck. They stand there, chatting with friends, hoping to catch the "big one".

As the Sun departs for the day, a lone sailboat leaves Bayfield harbour to give its occupants the best view of the spectacle. What a way to end the day.

A lonely Muskoka (Adirondack) chair sitting on the beach at Bayfield, just as the Sun is about to set. It's the end of another wonderful day at the beach. The warm, late day breezes bring a sense of comfort as you look-out over Lake Huron to view the last vestiges of the day.

This image depicts a sailboat leaving the harbour at Bayfield. I remember it being a wonderfully clear day with the wind just starting to pick up.

As sunsets go, this one was pretty much perfect. The sky was cloudless and the almost perfectly calm water of Lake Huron gave an overall dreaminess to the spectacle. Here the Sun is just kissing the horizon, which is otherwise just an indistinct transition between sky and water. Everything was surreal.

Summer Sunset over Lake Huron

Port Huron's Lakeside Brewing Co. was only around from 1936 to 1937, but its facility on Bard Street dated all the way back to 1875, when the company was founded under its proprietor's name, Charles Samberg. This is the label for American Bud produced by Lakeside Brewing Company. The State of Michigan required makers of beer and wine to register labels of alcoholic products with the Commerce Commission. While this practice was discontinued in the 1950's, the Archives maintains the historic collection of Michigan-made brews from the early to mid-twentieth century.

The Cheboygan Crib Lighthouse on Lake Huron was moved here near the Cheboygan river in the 80's after the crib it rested on further into the lake was found to be unsound.

I took a walk to look out over Lake Huron on a wonderfully clear morning. The surface of the lake looked so strange with a pattern of areas with ripples caused by a breeze and yet other areas were perfectly calm. Although unseen, it appeared that the breezes were isolated in bands running laterally. It gave the surface of the lake a curious texture as if the lake was no longer flat but undulating. If it wasn't for the fishing boat leaving harbour, you might wonder what you were viewing.

I'd Rather be by the lake in Michigan, vacationing up north along a Great Lake or one of our favorite inland lakes. Gather the lake squad to enjoy the great outdoors by the lake! From Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and the thousands of beautiful fresh inland lakes, Michiganders are lucky to call Michigan home!
