Chandler’s Wharf, also known as the Calder-Thorpe Warehouse, was built in 1884. This vernacular style warehouse was built for Phila Lazarus Calder (1806-1888), who inherited the property from her father, Aaron Lazarus (1771-1841). The property remained in the Lazarus family until its purchase in 1910 by W. B. Thorpe & Company, dealers in coal, wood, and builder’s supplies, which used it and the adjacent Rankin & Martin warehouse until 1943. In 1978, the two warehouses were rehabilitated into the eclectic collection of shops, galleries, and offices that it is today. is a shopping complex in a renovated 19th Century river wharf building. Most days there was a threat of rain so we had disposable panchos and umbrellas which, luckily, we never had to use. The rains came, but in the middle of the night. This Neoclassical structure was completed between 1861 and 1874, and is based on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. The west facade ends in projecting bays, and a portico projects from the center of the building. At the base of the portico, seven granite archways brace and support the porch above. Eight fluted Corinthian columns line the portico. A cornice supports the pediment above depicting Minerva surrounded by Education, Justice, and Mining. Above the flat roof with balustrade are two drums supporting a dome. The first drum consists of a colonnade of Corinthian columns; the second, Corinthian pilasters. The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is one of two covered bridges left in North Carolina, (the other being the Pisgah Covered Bridge in Randolph county), and is possibly the last wooden bridge in the United States with Haupt truss construction. It was built in 1895 by Andy L. Ramsour in Claremont, North Carolina, and crosses over Lyle creek. The bridge is a National Civil Engineering Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project to build the bridge was started in 1894 when Catawba County Commissioners requested nearby owners of the Bunker Hill Farm to build and maintain a bridge that would cross Lyle Creek on the old Island Ford Road (a former Native American trail).
