My second accidental Christmas in New Zealand was celebrated in and around Mt Cook village. We started things off with a quick visit to Tasman Glacier view point. Considering I thought it would just be a flat braided river with a bit of snow in the distance I was totally blown away by the view! This is painted hiding under a rock for shade while having good chats with a DOC worker.

If you're ever in Mt Cook/Aoraki Village, get up to Mueller Hut! It's the most dramatic out of this world location that I've hiked to yet. If you sit still long enough in the summer you'll catch bits of the ice shelf falling.

Combined images - the Milky Way Galaxy is a stitch of six overlapping photos. This was then resized and replaced the sky of Aoraki/Mt Cook. The latter was darkened to make it look like night. This memorial commemorates more than 100 climbers who have died in the New Zealand Aoraki/Mt Cook area in the past. It is a fitting reminder of the dangers of mountain climbing. This is one of many photos taken on our truly amazing 6 hour walk up the Hooker Valley from the Mt Cook centre to Hooker Lake and Glacier. That walk was for me about the most spectacular scenery that I have ever seen, outranking that of what I saw in Canada. The memorial is close to the start of the walk. Hooker Valley in New Zealand South Island is between Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Cook Village. The trail along the valley is one of the most spectacular places on earth and on this winter's day, it was brilliant sunshine. I converted the original colour to B&W as it gives a far more dramatic effect. Using a red filter darkens the sky and I changed it to be completely black.
