I created this piece in response to the news that someone I knew from my younger years on Vancouver island was battling terminal cancer. I contacted his family to ask what his spirit animal might be and was told that he repeatedly loved to draw humpbacks. This made the image of the humpback being an island come to mind immediately, like he represented the stability and structure of their family. I researched homes on stilts at that point and found many great images of homes that were colorful and barn like to the east coast of Canada. I felt like the home he would choose to be would be one of color and uniqueness and the perfect place for an artist.

A dark fantastic fearful tree. A mythic fantastical landscape. Done with charcoal, charcoal powder, and ink on paper, photographed and then uploaded to the computer. I haven't manipulated the image through any image program. Fine art tree done in a dark fantasy style. There is an ethereal ephemeral atmosphere (hence the title - i hate coming up with titles, but it's good for SEO you know?). That's also why I'm writing this long paragraph that over explains and perhaps takes away the image and hopefully you aren't reading this. Dark surrealism, dark fantasy, sort of a Labyrinth vibe is something that I would like to do more in the future. Something that isn't cartoon, isn't realistic, but hits something in a separate category.

Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist known for his Surrealist works. He was born in Barcelona in 1893 and began his career as a commercial artist before moving to Paris in 1920. There, he was influenced by the Surrealist movement and developed his own unique style, characterized by biomorphic shapes, bright colors, and abstract forms. Miró's works are considered some of the most important in the Surrealist movement and he is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
