Swan Lake Ballerina

A return to wildlife watercolours. From the start of this year I've been fortunate to have taken on a job where one of the daily tasks is to feed the garden's birds. This has allowed me the opportunity to capture some primary photographic reference that I've then painted from. When it comes to wildlife paintings, I like to work in watercolours because it adds a bit more of that hand painted element. Mistakes can be made and it only adds to the final product. I also worked these paintings a little more illustrative by adding in some thick outlines, cross hatching where it was welcomed and a little touch of pencils and paint pens. Swan Lake

Whilst walking around Stodmarsh Nature Reserve, just outside Canterbury,Kent,U.K., I spotted this pair of swans busy preening themselves in a quiet corner of the marsh; under cover of a dense tree canopy. It was quite dark around them, but fortunately they were lit by some sunlight filtering through. Canon 20D Canon 70-200mm@200 1/350s f5.6 ISO400. In Photoshop,I cropped slightly,tweaked the levels and added a bit of radial blur to enhance the focus on the two swans. 337 views 24/12/2012
