The shaking of the apple tree in fairy tales is no coincidence, because in old traditions people shook apple trees during the rough nights to ask Frau Holle for a good harvest. The Rauhnächte, which was once also called Modranecht, i.e. mother's nights, are originally dedicated entirely to the mother and the birth of her light baby.

"The Snow Maiden", or "Snegurochka" as it is known in Russian, is a very popular Russian fairy tale. There are several versions of this story, and they are all good! This illustration was inspired by the many versions of this story, and by the beauty of a winter night.

Kharchaana is the Snow Maiden from the Yakut people of the Sakha Republic in Siberia. She accompanies Chyskhaan, Lord of the Cold, who brings winter to the region. The border was inspired by a traditional Yakut design symbolizing the sky and the stars, but I replaced the stars with snowflakes.
