If the drinker of the poison survived he was guilty & would be sold into slavery & his possessions confiscated, on the other hand if he was innocent he would die soon enough & the Chief would confiscate his possessions & sell his family into slavery. So a win win situation for the Chief then, who would also earn extra from selling the victim to the colonial slave traders.
