Inner Moat At Caerphilly Castle Magnet

Caerphilly Castle, or Castell Caerfili in Welsh, is situated in the centre of the County Borough of Caerphilly in South Wales. It dates from the 13th century when it was constructed by Gilbert de Clare with work starting in in 1268.It was intended as a means of conquering Glamorgan and is one of the earliest concentric castles in Britain. It is surrounded by defensive lakes which form the moat. At the end of the C15th and into the C16th it fell into decline. However, the Marquesses of Bute acquired the castle in the C18th and gradually restoration began. This image was captured one afternoon in early March during a stormy period of weather.
