MiG-23 was designed to replace the MiG-21, at the request of the VVS, between 1961 and 1964. The aircraft had to have the ability to operate from rough terrain with a more advanced weapon system.

The MiG-23 was the Soviet Air Force's "Top Gun"-equivalent aggressor aircraft from the late 1970s to the late 1980s.

Designed by the Soviet Union's Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau, the first prototype flew in 1964 and the aircraft entered service in 1970.

Designed as a mass-produced and relatively cheap light tactical fighter, the MiG-29 first flew on 6th October 1977. After extensive flight testing, it entered production in 1982 and deliveries to the Soviet Air Force began in 1983.
