The mountains in the background are the Chugach Mountains, which tower over Anchorage, and the one in the pint is Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, which I can see from my studio on sunny days, even though it's 133 miles from Anchorage as the crow flies. This painting is called a Toast to Our Mountains. The foam in the pint glasses resembles Denali (the tallest mountain in North America), and neighboring mountains in the Alaska Range - Mt. Hunter and Mt. Foraker. Denali is in the light beer glass. The Alaska Range is painted in the background with Talkeetna River. Just because everyone else is going the other way it doesn't mean they're going the right way.

I enjoyed painting this view, and especially all the strata in the rocks. It comes from Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic coast in Dorset, UK. Most visitors flock to the circular cove that gives the place its name, or head the other way from the large carpark, over the hill to the rock arch of Durdle Door. This view though is Stairhole - a rock formation between the two, where a sloping wall of rock allows the sea in through a few holes (two are shown here). Its a popular spot for adventurous types who play in the water and climb on the rocks, and also with geology students, but on a rough day like this it can be deserted. The South African Bushmen created San-rock art about 60,000 years ago. The image, located at the Game Pass Shelters in the Darkens berg Mountains, depicts a dying eland and a man with hooves and hairs like the eland holding its tail, as experts observed. This is a digitally recreated version with changed background and accentuated forms. The original theme and its feel, however, remain intact to the extent possible.

Rock Art, Cup and Ring, Spiral design.

There are many cave houses in the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense. From the outside they can be mistaken for traditional village houses but the facades align with the hill and the chimneys protrude through the hill above. Inside the houses are comfortable because they are cool in summer and warm in winter. I thought this pretty cave, in the main street near the entrance to Canjayar, would make a good subject for a watercolour. This cave can be found on the coast of the Isle of Arran (Scotland), just a short walk from Blackwaterfoot. There is a second in the background that is kept locked as it contains archaeology of early human use, but it is this one that caught my attention. The shape of the aperture could be that of a squash or an onion, but to me it looked like a whisky still - how appropriate for an island that had just started distilling its own whisky again (this was a few years ago, so it should be fully matured now). Painted wet into wet oil in one day on a 10x12 inch board.
