*Cobo Bay, Guernsey* Number of views as of 22nd April 2019 = 3260. The second largest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey lies off the west coast of Normandy (France). It is not part of the United Kingdom or the European Union, although its defence is the responsibility of the UK and it is a possession of the British Crown. Cobo Bay is in the Castel parish on the west coast of the island facing the Atlantic Ocean, though it is just 3 miles from the island's capital St Peter Port (on the east coast). Although popular for surfing and other water sports, enthusiasts must be wary of the rocky, granite outcrops on this stretch of the coast, which date from 570 million years ago. Guernsey Mystery - Solved! Number of views as of 8th May 2019 = 470. One of the island of Guernsey's unusual architectural features is this structure which crosses La Route de Carteret, just inland from Cobo Bay. Despite searching the web, I was unable to find out why it was built or what it is/was used for. However, thanks to my friend pix-elation, I now know that it was built to allow children from the manor house at nearby Saumarez Park to walk to Cobo Bay without having to cross the road. Sark Bus Number of views as of 5th June 2017 = 400. There are no cars on the Channel Island of Sark, but tractors are allowed, as are bicycles and horse-drawn carts. Visitors to the island who can't make the long trek uphill from the harbour to the village centre do make use of the 'Sark Bus', which is basically a covered trailer towed by one of the island's tractors as shown here. Sark is just over 2 square miles in area and has a population of around 600 people, swelled during the summer months by visitors who arrive chiefly from the neighbouring island of Guernsey. High Speed Cat Number of views as of 29th August 2018 = 620. One of three high-speed catamarans formerly operated on routes linking the English ports of Poole and Weymouth, the French port of St Malo and the Channel Island ports of St Peter Port (Guernsey) and St Helier (Jersey). This 'cat' and her sister ships were built by a Tasmanian company (Incat) and were registered in Nassau in the Bahamas. The vessels are 86 metres (282 feet) long, weigh 5000 tonnes, can carry 800 passengers and 200 vehicles, and have a maximum speed of 40 knots. Date: 23rd August 2014. Crossing La Coupee Number of views as of 27th June 2018 = 775. La Coupee is a narrow strip of land, just 10 feet (3 metres) wide, connecting the island of Sark (in the Channel Islands) and the peninsula of Little Sark. There are no motor cars on Sark, only tractors and horse-drawn transport. Here, one of the island's horsemen negotiates the narrow causeway. This has to be done at quite a speed to give the vehicle enough momentum to get up the slope behind me. And with a sheer drop of 260 feet (80 metres) either side, there is little margin for error. Brean Down, Steep Holm & Flat Holm Number of views as of 18th January 2018 = 440. Brean Down, between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea (Somerset, England) is a great place for 360 degree views of the Bristol Channel, the Somerset Levels, the Mendip and Quantock Hills and South Wales. This shot includes the islands of Steep Holm (left) and Flat Holm, with the South Wales coast on the horizon. The trees that survive life on Brean Down have to be hardy, and some grow almost horizontally, bowed by the prevailing westerly winds. Steep Holm island (or in the Welsh language: Ynys Rhonech) is a nature reserve and SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and lies 5 miles off the Somerset coast.
