Hill Valley is a fictional town in California that serves as the setting of the Back to the Future trilogy and its animated spin-off series. In the trilogy, Hill Valley is seen in four different time periods – 1885, 1955, 1985, and 2015 – as well as in a dystopian alternate 1985.[1] The films contain many sight gags, verbal innuendos and detailed set design elements, from which a detailed and consistent history of the area can be derived. The city name "Hill Valley" is a joke, being an oxymoron. However, an early script for Back to the Future Part II mentioned that Hill Valley was named after its founder, William "Bill" Hill.

This images is one of a few showing some of the details adorning the façade of the Hotel de Ville (city hall) in downtown Paris. This specific section is a small part of the main tower on top of the building (the clock tower) which reads Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, which is the national motto of France and the Republic of Haiti. Although this slogan finds its origins in the French Revolution, it was not institutionalized until the Third Republic at the end of the 19th century. After 3 years of planning and 10 years of construction, Toronto's third city hall was completed in 1899 and became home to the city council until 1966. Looking back up the Kirkgate to Dunfermline City Chambers which is a building historically designed to be the centre of local government in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. In more recent times most of these functions have been devolved to other locations, but [as of 2008] the impressive edifice still houses the Council Chambers, the Burgh Court and Dunfermline's Registrar Office. The building, constructed in the period 1875-79, was created by James C Walker who also designed the first Carnegie Library. It employs a harmonious composite of French, Gothic and Scots baronial architectural styles and features a prominent four-face clock tower.

Galle had been a prominent seaport long before western rule in the country. Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Malays, Indians, and Chinese were doing business through Galle port. In 1411. The "modern" history of Galle starts in 1502, when a small fleet of Portuguese ships, under the command of Lourenço de Almeida, on their way to the Maldives, were blown off course by a storm. Realising that the king resided in Kotte close to Colombo Lourenço proceeded there after a brief stop in Galle. In 1640, the Portuguese had to surrender to the Dutch East India Company. This Clock Tower was designed as a memorial to the Duke of Wellington and was built in 1854 at the southern approach to London Bridge. After becoming something of a 'traffic hazard', it was removed and re-erected on its present site in Swanage, Dorset in 1867/68 by local entrepreneurs John Mowlem and his nephew George Burt. Mowlem's business was importing stone into the city of London from around the country, including Purbeck limestone transported by boat from Swanage.
