Another view from my office window, looking over the roofs of Edinburgh, Scotland. The tower is the tall cupola of Broughton St Mary's Parish Church. The church stands on Bellevue Crescent in Edinburgh's New Town, and was built in 1824 to a design by Thomas Brown. The church was originally known as Bellevue Church, then as St Mary's Parish Church, taking its present name upon union with Broughton Macdonald Church. Just behind the Cupola, you can see a few of the glass structures of Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens. In the distance over the rooftops can be seen the hills of the Kingdom of Fife.

New Craig House is a historic house located on Easter Craiglockhart Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Bell’s Brae leading to Dean Village in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like most cities, Edinburgh started as a small town with lots of other towns and villages all around. Edinburgh has swallowed them all into its ever expanding boundaries. Dean Village is one of these. Few tourists know that 15 minutes away from Princes Street lies the secluded Dean Village on the Water of Leith. Once a successful milling community, the area was once associated with poverty and decay but the buildings have been turned into designer flats and the village is now a popular residential area. The name Dean means ‘deep valley’ as the village lies 30 meters below the rest of Edinburgh.

New College on the Mound in Edinburgh, Scotland is home to the School of Divinity at The University of Edinburgh. The College shares its site with the General Assembly Hall, the main meeting venue of the Church of Scotland. Over its history Edinburgh has been one of the world’s leading centres of Reformed theology, and has been home to distinguished theologians such as HR Mackintosh, John Baillie, TF Torrance and John McIntyre, and influential biblical scholars and expositors such as James S. Stewart and James Barr. The site on the Mound, in the centre of Edinburgh, was purchased in 1844 for £10,000. The celebrated Edinburgh Architect, William Henry Playfair, designed the buildings.

Ok, I admit it, this image is inspired by Chris Clark's wonderful image Tree of Light. I even pinched his title, aren’t I awful - hehe. Taken in Princes Street Gardens during the very enjoyable redbubble meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th April 09. It was a great day out with a bunch of very talented photographers. Chris was the one who spotted the light around this little tree in the park with the imposing bulk of Edinburgh Castle towering above it. Engine Room, Royal Yacht Britannia

The Big Wheel on Princes Street, Edinburgh. The wheel is part of the Christmas fair which appears every year at the end of November. Behind the wheel is the monument to Sir Walter Scott. It was built during 1836-46. The architect was George Meikle Kemp (1795-1844), a joiner who entered the competition under a pseudonym to avoid prejudice; the joiner/architect sadly fell into the Union Canal in the fog and drowned before the work was completed.

The former Bank of Scotland headquarters at The Mound, Edinburgh, Scotland. Now headquarters of the merged HBOS, the building has dominated the northern flank of Edinburgh’s Old Town for 300 years. The shot is from Cockburn Street. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters looks down over East Princes Street Gardens. The HQ Building was initiated while Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811), was Governor of the Bank. The Bank Headquarters was built by architects Robert Reid (1774 - 1856) and Richard Crichton. David Bryce (1803 - 76) refurbished the Interior in 1862 and added new domed wings with a grand replacement central dome. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters were remodelled again in 1929 and 1981.

An old cemetery lying on Calton Hill in Edinburgh which opened in 1718 for the burial of tradesmen and merchants. It was extended in 1767, but divided in 1818 by the building of Waterloo Place (the street at bottom right). The larger part lies to the south of Waterloo Place and includes a number of grand and interesting memorials. An enormous obelisk (shaped liked Cleopatra's needle) by Thomas Hamilton (1784 - 1858) remembers the political martyrs of 1793, who were 'transported' for sedition. The classical monument (the round one) to philosopher David Hume (1711-76) was built in 1777 by Robert Adam (1728-92) and the Emancipation Monument (1893), comprising a bronze of Abraham Lincoln with a grateful freed slave.

The fountain and statue of Greyfriers Bobby is in the centre of the shot, and behind it, an Edinburgh Tour Bus coming up Candlemaker Row. On February 15th 1858 John Grey an Edinburgh Police force night watchman died from tuberculosis and was buried in Greyfriars Church yard. His faithful sky terrier (Bobby) became a local legend because he refused to leave his masters grave. Sir William Chambers (The Lord Provost of Edinburgh) paid Bobby's license and presented him with a collar with a brass inscription "Greyfriars Bobby from the Lord Provost 1867 licensed". Flowers And Houses In Edinburgh Terrace

It has been years since it got cold enough for long enough in Lowland Scotland for the rivers and lochs to freeze enough for ice skating. But not to worry, it is still possible to ice skate in the open air on the very popular Ice Rink in Edinburgh's East Princes Street Gardens. The rink is built every year as part of the Edinburgh Christmas fair.
