A digitally produced sketch from my original photograph of a hovercraft leaving the beach at Southsea, Hampshire on England's south coast during late afternoon. It speeds foot passengers over the Solent to Ryde in about 10 minutes. The service started in 1965 and iIt's now believed to be unique in Western Europe.

A sailing barge heading into Portsmouth Harbour. The image was captured from the Southsea end of Portsmouth, looking out on to Spithead. In the background are the hills of the Isle of Wight with yachts and a car ferry. These barges are more commonly seen in the Thames estuary and East Anglia area where they were once the local freight carriers.

Solent Express Number of views as of 9th October 2018 = 1000. Pictured departing from Ryde on the Isle of Wight on its way across the Solent to Southsea, this is Hovertravel's BHT130 "Solent Express" hovercraft. Introduced in 2007, the Solent Express carries 130 passengers, is diesel-powered, and makes the crossing in just under 9 minutes, at least 13 minutes faster than its closest competitor. The Ryde-Southsea link is one of only two scheduled, year-round hovercraft services in the world and is certainly the longest running service, having been introduced in 1965. This painting is based on a photo I took some years ago walking near Carisbrooke on the Isle Of Wight. The path follows a green lane - an historic route that has over centuries of use worn down below the level of the surrounding land. Most of these routes have been turned into roads, but this one remains a dusty lane. Painted in oil on a 10x12 inch board, starting with a big brush, and working wet into wet with ever finer brushes.

Hengistbury Head, Christmas Day 2014 Number of views as of 8th April 2018 = 700. Hengistbury Head at the eastern end of Poole Bay shelters Christchurch Harbour from the prevailing westerly winds. The remains of both Stone Age and Iron Age settlements provide evidence that the Head has been inhabited on and off for over 12,500 years. In more recent times, 18th & 19th century smugglers landed their cargoes on the beach, and there’s even the remains of a Victorian quarry and port. Modern amenities include a large car park, popular cafe, and a golf course, not to mention the brightly coloured “Noddy” train, a favourite with children and adults alike. Scratchell's Bay, Isle of Wight Number of views as of 9th May 2018 = 390. Situated just South East of The Needles and facing the English Channel, the name Scratchell's Bay is thought to come from one of many names for the Devil. There is no way down to the shingle beach from the cliff top, it can only be reached by boat. The bay has been the site of many shipwrecks, including that of the Irex in 1890. The Irex was a new full-rigged sailing ship, bound from Glasgow to Rio de Janeiro with a cargo of iron pipes. After being battered by storms for 20 days, first in the Irish Sea and then in the Bay of Biscay and with some of the crew injured and a shifted cargo, the captain decided to seek shelter. One of the groyne markers on the beach between Branksome Chine, Poole and Alum Chine, Bournemouth on the Dorset coast. On the horizon, you can see the white cliffs of Alum Bay and The Needles on the Isle of Wight.

Storm over the Needles Number of views as of 9th June 2019 = 590. A view from Southbourne beach, east of Bournemouth (Dorset, England) with some threatening weather lurking over the Needles on the Isle of Wight. Date: 23rd March 2008.

This is one of the views on my favourite walk on the isle of Wight. This section of the walk starts at the Needles, or rather the secret rocket test facility, and follows the sinuous ridge of Tennyson Down. Its grassland all the way with wildflowers, lumps of chalk scattered around by the burrowing rabbits, and blue butterflies fluttering about. View to the left is toward Yarmouth and the mainland, and to the right, a great expanse of blue sea, coloured that way by the chalk. After the summit of Tennyson down, its downhill all the way to Freshwater Bay, with this view of the ridge that stretches right across the island ahead. The bay itself remains out of sight beyond the two rooftops. Painted in oil on a 12x12 inch board.

The beach at Ryde, Isle Of Wight (UK) stretches far out at low tide, but at the far end and at high tide it is just a little strip, where tourists are happy to spend a day enjoying themselves by the sea. I've painted this view of a typical summer day in oil on board.

The mouth of the River Medina (Cowes, Isle of Wight) is surprisingly industrialised - but in a nice small business kind of way. If you take the slow car ferry from Southampton, this is the view you get as it comes into dock at Cowes. It caught my eye because of the jumble of interesting details such as the seaweed covered rails, the refuelling kiosk with its old pumps, the draped material for the doors, and the reflections on the windows - which are clearly not flat glass panels. I've painted this on a 16x12 inch board using oils and a lot of fiddling around with the detail.

Ventnor Beach, Isle Of Wight Number of views as of 20th November 2018 = 930. A warm, sunny day at the end of October in the seaside town of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. British weather at its unpredictable best! Situated in the Solent off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight is 23 miles long by 13 miles wide and has 60 miles of largely unspoilt coastline from the The Needles in the west to Bembridge in the east. Ventnor faces south-east and is sheltered by the land mass of St Boniface down, the highest point on the island at 787 feet. Ventnor's Museum of Smuggling History was opened in 1973 with the help of the local council. For this view I've used a dipping pen and ink on A4 cartridge paper. Its a great medium for detail but unforgiving, as every mark is instantly permanent. To get the view I went to Ryde on the Isle Of Wight, and at low tide walked right out across the sand until I was level with the end of the pier. From their I looked back at the hoverport and the town behind.

St Catherine's Trilogy - Part 3 Number of views as of 11th March 2018 = 2950. The sun sets behind St. Catherine's Oratory, a mediaeval lighthouse, built on St. Catherine's Hill on the south coast of the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. Actually, the site is too frequently shrouded in fog to be useful as a lighthouse. The current lighthouse, constructed after the 1837 wreck of the Clarendon, was built much closer to sea level. St Catherine's Trilogy - Part 2 Number of views as of 11th June 2019 = 3240. St. Catherine's Oratory, a mediaeval lighthouse on St. Catherine's Hill on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. In February 1314, Walter de Godeton was put on trial in Southampton before an Island jury for the theft of wine from a shipwreck in Chale Bay the previous year. He was found guilty and fined 287 marks. However, as the wine was bound for the monastery of Livers in Picardy, de Godeton was also tried by Church courts for the same offence. The Church threatened to excommunicate de Godeton unless he built a lighthouse near Chale Bay. There was already an oratory on the top of the hill, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. St Catherine's Trilogy - Part 1 Number of views as of 31st May 2019 = 2975. Known locally as the "Pepperpot", St. Catherine's Oratory is a mediaeval lighthouse on St. Catherine's Hill on the southern coast of the Isle of Wight. It was built by Walter de Godeton, Lord of Chale, as an act of penance for plundering wine from the shipwreck St. Marie of Bayonne in Chale Bay on April 20th, 1313 A.D. Alum Bay, Isle of Wight Number of views as of 25th February 2018 = 650. A two shot stitch taken from the public footpath leading to the Needles Old Battery, and featuring the coloured sand cliffs of Alum Bay and the heather-clad downland of Headon Warren behind. If you look closely, you can see the boat which runs trips to view the Needles, and the chair lift from The Needles Park "tourist attraction" down to the beach. Date: 27th October 2009.
