The original name of the Shetland Sheepdog was the Shetland Collie because it resembles a smaller Rough Collie, but they actually aren't related so the name was changed. The Sheltie is a small herding dog from Scotland who is a clever all-around worker and loyal family pet. So loyal in fact that they're nicknamed "Shadow" because they haunt their owner's steps so closely.

Greyhounds, aka English Greyhounds, are very quick friends. Sleek and muscular, they were bred for coursing and hunting quick game like rabbits. In the modern era they are used for organized racing and - even better - as household pets. These swift hounds can reach an average of 40mph and reach that speed within six strides of a dead stop.

The Komondor, aka the Hungarian Sheep Dog is a national treasure of Hungary. Dating all the way back to the 1540s, the Komondor was bred to guard livestock, especially sheep which their corded coat resembles. The unique coats are formed naturally of a soft undercoat and coarse outer coat. As puppies only the fluffy undercoat is present, but as they grow older they mature into the full mop we know and love.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi are two completely different breeds. They both have wide, expressive faces, tall pointed ears, and short stubby legs but the Pembroke has no tail and the Cardigan does! The taillessness is a gene, not the result of surgical adjustment. If you breed a Cardigan and a Pembroke together, it's possible to get a half tail out of the deal! If you can believe it, they were bred as cattle dogs. The short legs keep them out of reach of the back legs and powerful kicks.

The American Hairless Terrier is a naturally hairless breed. They are closely related to the Rat Terrier and resemble them in all ways except baldness. They are friendly and playful and easy to train. AHT puppies are actually born with a fuzzy coat. They shed this fuzz within six weeks of birth and are forever hairless afterward except their eyebrows and whiskers. Unlike other dogs, they will break out in a sweat if they are hot or afraid.

English Setters are a merry breed that gets along well with other dogs and people. They are the Gentlemen of the Dog World with a snowy coat and soft expression. Bred as a gun dog, they're intelligent and mischievous as they seek their quarry by following the scent on the air.

They are closely related to the Cocker Spaniel - so much so that Springers and Cockers were sometimes birthed from the same litters. The breeds have differentiated more over time. English Springers are still used as gun dogs around the world. The show line is susceptible to something called "rage syndrome" which is a behavioral condition where aggression might emerge suddenly, but it is actually very rare. If your Springer is exhibiting unusual aggressive behavior, investigate changes in it's health or environment before assuming the worst.

Pronounced “case-hawnd,” the Keeshond is the national dog of the Netherlands. They are a member of the Nordic Siptz family, bred to ride barges in Amsterdam and is nicknamed the Smiling Dutchman. They have a two-layer coat to protect from water with silver and black markings. The dark patches around their eyes tend to look like a pair of spectacles! Keeshonden (the official plural of Keeshond) are very attentive and intelligent, and ready to do anything asked of them.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a bright, energetic, willing pet companion with a thick, wooly coat perfectly suited for the American northeast where it originated. The Chessie was bred as a gundog to retrieve waterfowl, pull in fishing nets, and even rescue fishermen! On top of that they're a wonderful family dog very similar to their cousins, the Labroador Retrievers.

Hungarian King Matthias I respected the breed so much, he counted his Kuvasz more trustworthy than his palace guards for protection against traitors. The plural of Kuvasz is Kuvaszok pronounced coo-va-sock (the singular is pronounced coo-vass) and comes from a misspelling of the word turkish word "Kawasz" which means "armed guard"

Pugs are historic Chinese dogs that came to Europe as early as the 16th century. They're very popular for their large eyes and short muzzles, a mug that has made them popular in movies and print. These short noses often make them snore and snuffle, but they also lead to respiratory issues, so a movement has started to breed healthier anatomy back into them.
