I had been thinking of painting this for some time. My local theatre (Romsey, Hampshire, UK), is an old art deco cinema, is used by the local amateur dramatics group. It sits on a busy traffic junction, and its lit up at night. So I waited for a performance and took many photos of the people arriving, plus the additional light from car headlamps. From a combination of these my latest oil painting captures the mood of people visiting the theatre - quite possibly for a pantomime (note the Christmas tree). Painted in oil on a 12x12 inch board

Golden Birds greek column psychedelic abstract oil painting photography

Yak is a type of wild ox that is native to the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia. It is an integral part of many Asian cultures, especially in the Himalayas, where it is used as a source of dairy products, meat, and fiber. Yak milk is especially popular in the Tibetan and Nepalese cuisines. Yak meat is also used in some traditional dishes, such as momos and thukpa. Yak fiber is used to make ropes, tents, and other items. In some parts of Asia, yak is also used for riding and transportation, as it is known for its strength and endurance.

Whilst many have seen the mountains of Glencoe, few have veered from the main road to take the back route behind the Chlachaid Inn, and fewer still would have spotted a clump of Scots pine on the hillside. Take a walk off that road at that point and in just a few yards you get this studpendous view - the reward for taking the road less travelled. I've painted it here in oil on a 16x12 inch board, based on a photo I took one snowy March a few years ago.

Carn Mor Dearg is one of the highest peaks in Scotland, and its relatively easy ascent ends in a pleasingly pointy top. From there an entertaining route heads down along the arete that joins it to its larger neighbour - Ben Nevis. This view painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board comes from one of my trips to the mountains, when one Easter I tackled the route and was rewarded with spectacular views of the rocky back of Ben Nevis, as well as Carn Mor Dearg and its arete (ridge seen lower right side of pic).

It was 2016 when I went to Helmsdale (NE Scotland), and on my first look around I saw this view on the road into the wilderness of the flow country on the edge of town with the Helmsdale river snaking back to its boggy source. The road itself bends off to the left out of sight (its not obvious from the source photo either). From that point on it rained all trip. I've painted this view in oil on a 16x12 inch board, using a lot of mauve with naples yellow as the base for the background, into which I blended sap green, crimson, cobalt blue and a fair amount of titanium white - all done working wet paint into wet paint on the board.

Those that like to fly around in old cars as they missed the train to school may be familiar with this view. Its looking down on the Glenfinnan viaduct that carries the West Highland line to Mallaig - made famous by the Harry Potter films. And no I wasn't in a flying car to get this view - I was climbing one of the surrounding peaks. It was February, it was damp and cold and I was about to enter the cloud base. I didn't get much further before turning back. I took the photo long before the films were made, and only now produced a 16x12 inch oil painting based on it. Was I tempted to add a flying car? Well no, as us muggles can't see them anyway.

Glenfinnan is where the infamous railway viaduct of Harry Potter fame can be found (I plan to paint that one another time). In this view it is behind me as I look out along the loch early on a May morning. The obvious view that everyone photographs is the gap at the end of the loch, but my eyes are drawn to the little peninsula and its clump of lush trees which are reflected in the calm water. It makes a suitable conclusion to the superb hike from Inverie through the glens of Knoydart that had taken me the previous three days. Painted from my original photographs, using oil on a 20x16 board, over an earlier version of the view.

Second Valley beach oil painting was created from one of the many reference photos I took while staying in Second Valley in South Australia on a family holiday. The sun is shining on the hill in the background reflecting a golden colour and the ocean is a gorgeous blue. Second Valley is a small beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula where I enjoyed many holidays as a child.

Frampton on Severn is a small village sitting on the edge of the Cotswolds and boasts the longest village green in England, which is surrounded by barns, cottages and tudor buildings - here one depicted as an oil painting from an original photograph of mine.
