A canalside scene at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford canal here is overlooked by the parish church of Holy Cross. The church and village predate the canal by several centuries - the River Cherwell being the only waterway then! There has been a church here since the C12th but after a number of additions it was demolished in 1831 and the present Gothic Revival one built. London Cityscape

The boathouses on the River Thames belonging to the Oxford colleges as viewed from the Thames Path. They are situated between Folly Bridge in Oxford and Iffley Lock. These buildings replace the barges which were established as clubhouses in the 1800s, the first being built in the 1930s. Many of them have a distinct Art Deco style. The newest, however, was constructed in the late 1980s. Here you can often see the rowing crews in training as they power they way along the river.

The lift bridge (221) at Thrupp on the Oxford Canal just north of Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. Thrupp is a purely canal village - the road stops here! Aubreys Bridge or, as it is sometimes known, Smithy Bridge takes traffic to a car park and tea rooms. Boats passing through the bridge take a sharp left turn to moor or continue on the way to Banbury. This part of the Oxford Canal opened in 1788 and largely follows the course of the River Cherwell. She began her existence as the Muse of Chorus but most know here as the Muse of Tragedy. Melpomene is seen here atop the Clarendon Building in Oxford, England, one of the statues of the Nine Muses which reside there.

An old Oxford college barge hiding in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid 1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

The stone bridge (No. 220) crossing the Oxford Canal at Shipton-on-Cherwell. This is one of the stone 'Brindley' bridges named after James Brindley the original supervising engineer of the canal. In front is a single lock gate. This is a 'stop lock' for isolating part of the canal for mainenance or if there is a danger of flooding. The bridge connects the village of Shipton on the right with farmland on the left as we view it. From here the canal continues through Thrupp to Oxford itself.

The River Thames as it flows between the villages of Streatley in Berkshire, England to the south and Goring in Oxfordshire to the north. This is a break between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. This is the view looking west from the bridge. Moored on the left is one of the old Oxford College barges - now an events venue for the hotel on the river bank. To the right the Thames rushes over the weir, boats passing through the lock. This weathervane, or weathercock, can be found on what used to be the India Institute in Oxford, England, Though the building now houses the Oxford Martin School vestiges of it's original use when it was completed in 1896 can still be seen.

A spring day on the Charles River

The village of Iffley-on-Thames at Oxford. At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock. In the background, rising above the trees, is the Norman church of St Mary the Virgin, a Grade 1 listed building.

This lovely C12th Norman church stands in the centre of the village, and is not far from the Kennet and Avon Canal. Carry on walking down the hill here and you cross Vicarage Bridge over the waterway to join the towpath leading to the lock. Kintbury's nearest town is Newbury, the administrative centre for West Berkshire.

The parish church of St Matthew at Midgeham in West Berkshire, England viewed from the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal. There had been a chapel at Midgeham since the early 1300s but the parish church seen here was not built and consecrated until the late 1850s. Commisioned by the local squire, it was designed by John Johnson in the Early English style which was very popular in the Victorian period. It has a peal of six bells, the oldest having been cast in 1674.

Looking south across the River Thames from the Buckinghamshire bank to the parish church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire, England. The church dates from the 12th century, the squat Norman tower being built around 1175. The buildings were extended over the following years, particularly by the Hoby family who lived in nearby Bisham Abbey. Walking along the Thames Path between Marlow and Henley on Thames, the buildings of both the church and abbey can be seen only a short distance from Marlow.

The parish church of St Mary in the riverside village of Streatley-on-Thames in Berkshire, England. It lies very near the river and is almost next to the bridge linking Streatley with Goring. The church dates from the 13th century but was largely rebuilt in the mid 1800s as it was becoming rather dilapidated. However, many of the original building materials were used such as stone and the flint used for facing. At this time the nave roof was heightened and the clerestory windows added to give more light. The church of St Andrew's in Chaddleworth, West Berkshire, England, seen in early spring. There was a church here in Saxon times and some stones from then can apparently be found at the base of the tower. However, the building as we see it is mainly Norman with 13th century additions. The south door is a superb example of decorated Norman work.The village of Chaddleworth lies on the southern slopes of the Berkshire (North Wessex) downs on the A338 which runs between Hungerford and Wantage.
