This design refers to the struggles of good against the forces of darkness and the lack of tolerance and human stupidity. In short, if you do wrong, you hurt yourself.

The Harpies, which means rapturous, were creatures represented either as beautiful and seductive women with long nails, or as terrible monsters with the body of a bird of prey, a woman's face and breasts. They kidnapped the bodies of the dead to enjoy their love, so they were represented in the tombs as if they were waiting for the dead, especially the young to snatch them. They were cruel and violent, being related to destructive winds, cyclones and storms. Harpies are creatures from Greek mythology, often represented as birds of prey with a woman's face and breasts. In Jason's story, harpies were sent to punish the blind Thracian king Phineus by stealing his food at every meal.

Five thousand people were tried for witchcraft in Switzerland until 1782. Two-thirds of them died at the stake after confessing under torture a pact with the Devil. The number of new candidates for confession under torture was endless. Even girls aged between 9 and 12 were not spared.

Swarms of wasps and hornets continuously stinging were the punishment for the uncommited and cowards. Dante witnesses these sinners' sufferings after passing through the gate of Hell, in the Vestibule of Hell, in Canto III.

This picture is inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Demons, sometimes translated as The Possessed or The Devils. Note: The last name of the writer is spelled both as Dostoyevsky and Dostoevsky.
