While organized drag racing came about in 1951, it was in the early '60s that the big three started paying attention. Detroit began quietly building stock-looking cars stuffed full of high-performance parts and no factory warranty, aimed squarely at taking drag strips by storm. With this new breed of off the lot drag racers, increasing numbers of people were suddenly able to get into drag racing without having to build a car from scratch, and boy did they ever. Once the bug had bitten them, they were all in as drag nuts and their stock racers began the never-ending modification process that all hot rodders go through in pursuit of speed.

The Jaguar E-Type or the Jaguar XK-E (North American market) was manufactured by the British company Jaguar cars between 1961 and 1975 and was capable of 150 MPH. This Illustration is of the series 1, manufactured between 1961 and 1968. The Series 1 was available as a two seater Fixed Head Coupé and as a two seater convertible "roadster". A "2+2" or four-seater version of the coupé, with a lengthened wheelbase, was released several years later. On its release in 1961, Enzo Ferrari called it "the most beautiful car ever made"

The 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge was evidence that muscle cars could reflect the cultural currents of their time. In most circumstances, a judge commands respect. But society in the 1960s grew increasingly irreverent toward establishment figures, and "Here comes da judge!" quickly went from a sardonic catchphrase on TV's Laugh-In to a staple of the American lexicon. In naming the newest GTO incarnation "The Judge," Pontiac seemed to be saying: "This car has authority, but like the Road Runner and its ilk, it doesn't take itself too seriously." Abundantly powerful V-8s secured the first part of the message; op-art graphics and bright primary colors brought home the second.

Speed Racer, also known as Mach GoGoGo is a Japanese media franchise about automobile racing. Mach GoGoGo was originally serialized in print in Shueisha's 1966 Shōnen Book. It was released in tankōbon book form by Sun Wide Comics and later re-released in Japan by Fusosha. Adapted into anime by Tatsunoko Productions, its 52 episodes aired on Fuji TV from April 1967 to March 1968.

The Ardun OHV conversion for the venerable Ford flathead was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his brother Yuri as the “Ardun Engine Company of New York” in the late forties. By then the “old flatty” had become the engine of choice for the burgeoning hot rod craze and dry lake racers recognized the potential to extract some additional power from their flatheads. In 1951 a group of hot rodders took their black deuce to Bonneville setting a C/Street Roadster record of 162.61 Mph and the unofficial title of noisiest car on the salt. Later that year, an engine dyno test recorded 303 Hp @ 5250 rpm with 25% fuel which were big numbers for the day.

Maloney's Racing Slicks was a top independent tire manufacturer in the 60s. They specialized in slicks for drag racing and early NASCAR as well as streetable 'cheater slicks,' all from their small facility right on Anaheim Boulevard in Southern California.

Ascot Park, originally named Los Angeles Speedway, later, New Ascot Stadium, and more commonly referred to as Ascot Speedway, was a dirt racetrack located near Gardena, California. Built on the site of a former garbage dump, the main track was a 1/2 mile dirt banked oval, The infield track was a quarter mile dirt banked oval with provisions for figure eight racing. Ascot Speedway was operated between 1957 and 1990, hosting over 5,000 events, including numerous national tour and Grand National races.
