The Mk14 (Mk XIV) Spitfire was a later war design that was designed as a filler till the full Mk18 could be produced. Before the Mk18 could appear there was an operational demand in 1943, for an improved Spitfire capable of greater performance at higher altitudes. To meet this demand, yet another interim type was evolved by the mating of a Mk VIII airframe and the Griffon engine. The result was the Spitfire Mk 14( XIV). Not only was it one of the most beautiful Spitfires it was built in far greater numbers than the eventual Mk 18 (XVIII).

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." The RAF were outnumbered 5 to 1 by both machines and men during The Battle of Britain. The average age of a pilot was 20 years old, some were as young as 18. A pilot officer would earn £ 264 pa, about £30,000 in today's money. Today a pilot officer earns £24,615 pa! Created from three images of my own, blended together in CS3 and enhanced with Color Efex filters.

On light surfaces July 1942 – 1947; not used on upper surfaces 1942–1945.

Used by units under South East Asia Command and in the CBI theatre in 1942. Red removed to avoid confusion with the Japanese hinomaru, but retained on fin flash. Not used for very long before being replaced by light blue and dark blue roundel.

Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams by the Royal Air Force in May of 1943. Squadron 617, later called the Dam Busters, used a purpose-built "bouncing bomb" developed by Barnes Wallis to destroy the dams.
