Rockies Magnets

I woke up on the last official day of summer in Banff National Park to a winter wonderland. Even though the snow all melted by noon, it was fun while it lasted! I captured this image of the mountains surrounding Lake Minnewanka as the mist started to clear around mid-morning.

Abraham Lake is often seen up-close, with the detail of its famous methane bubbles front and centre. This lookout gave a bit of a wider view of the lake, which looked like a blue, icy plain stretching far into the distance in both directions, with tall mountains marking its southern shores.

Our trip to Herbert Lake was a bit shorter than we would have liked, since it started raining as soon as we made it to the end of this track! Good thing the Canadian Rockies look gorgeous in rain, hail, or shine (although I found they were better viewed from inside the car in the rain)!

Denver Pride!

The crush of Athabasca Falls as the wide Athabasca River narrows and is forced through a small gorge. It made for an impressive -- and very loud -- sight!

Winter reflections can't be beaten, partially because of the stunning landscape they reflect, and partially because they are so rare! Luckily this area of Lake Louise often has a small area of open water, and this afternoon in late January was the perfect time to be there.

Could it get much better than this? Dogsledding alongside the frozen Spray Lakes in the Kananaskis was an experience to remember.

A small side road off the Icefields Parkway, meandering off towards a campsite that was closed (as everything on the Parkway is at this time of year). There was the perfect amount to pepper the roadside and mountains while still leaving the road clear for easy driving.

The snowy shoreline meets the frozen water of the Crowsnest River. I loved how there was a clear division here; one that probably wouldn't be visible later in the winter when everything is blanketed in a thick layer of snow!

Not-very-nice weather dogged us for our entire drive north on the Icefields Parkway, but it didn't really matter. While we would have liked to have seen the Parkway in brilliant sunshine on at least one of our drives, the angry clouds made for some great scenes in black & white!

The famous methane bubbles of Abraham Lake. Every year, this man-made reservoir freezes, causing the plants on the bottom of the lake to decompose and release methane bubbles, which freeze in place in the ice. The result is a mesmerising display all across the lake.

A cloudy sunrise and Mount Rundle perfectly reflected in one of the Vermilion Lakes on a calm November morning. I didn't even mind standing calf-deep in mud to see this! :)

Moraine Lake is one of my most popular workshop destinations, so over the summer, I watched the sunrise nearly 20 times there. It was fascinating to see how the lake changed over that time, as well as all the different sorts of lighting that can occur at that time of the morning. I captured the light on the Ten Peaks behind the canoes at the end of my second "All-Nighter" workshop in July. It was a great place to end our long night of shooting around the park!

Jasper national park in Alberta, Canada has some of the nicest mountain and nature scenery. Their beauty takes my breath away and fills me with a sense of wonder and awe. The Canadians Rockies are an amazing landscape.

Athabasca Falls is a hugely popular summer destination, with its intense falls crashing into the gorge and leaving visitors in awe. While the falls were barely running when we visited in early March, I found the contrasts of winter just as impressive; the dark walls of the gorge against the pale blue skies above, and the deep aquamarine of the water with the white blanket of snow surrounding it. It's a place I will stop at time and again, no matter what time of year it is.

Even in the -20º temperatures of a March morning in Jasper, the Athabasca River was flowing freely, the ice floating in its current just obscuring the reflections of the national park's mountains beyond.

The sheer joy of driving down the Icefields Parkway, with a view of a Canadian passing you and speeding off into the distance towards some of the most amazing scenery you'll ever see.

A few trees decided it was too hot on this summer's day and decided to go for a bit of swim in the Bow River. In actuality, they were probably taken down by the floods less than a month before.

The Denver Zephyrs (formerly the Denver Bears) were a Minor League Baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. They were a Triple-A team that played in the American Association from 1955 to 1962, the Pacific Coast League from 1963 to 1968, and the American Association again from 1969 to 1992. They played their home games at Mile High Stadium. They played as the Zephyrs from 1984 to 1992.
