Santa Fe New Mexico Magnets

Another flag mashup, this one was inspired by a good friend of mine, who grew up in Albuquerque but spent years and years living in (and working for) Chicago. Personally, I have never been to NewMexico, but have fond memories of the Windy City, the shorefront of Lake Michigan, St Patrick's day parade, the views from (then) Sears Tower. I will go to New Mexico one day. In the meantime, here's a take of what might have happened if Chicago had been located somewhat closer to Santa Fe than to the Great Lakes.

The Albuquerque Geckos were a short-lived lower-division pro soccer club during the late 1990’s. The Geckos were part of the sprawling United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues, joining the USISL’s 39-team nationwide D3 Pro League as an expansion club in 1997. The Geckos replaced the USISL’s recently folded New Mexico Chiles club in the Albuquerque market. Rod Underwood, the Chiles’ head coach from 1996, was hired to lead the Geckos in 1997.

The Eight Northern Pueblos of New Mexico are Taos, Picuris, Santa Clara, Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan), San Ildefonso, Nambé, Pojoaque, and Tesuque. Taos and Picuris are Tiwa-speaking pueblos; the rest speak Tewa. Tiwa and Tewa are closely related languages of the Tanoan language family. These pueblos make up the Eight Northern Pueblos Council, which sponsors craft fairs, advocates for the legal interests of the pueblos, etc. The Capital of the Eight Northern Pueblos is located in Ohkay Owingeh. Ohkay Owingeh was formerly known as San Juan, but changed to its original Tewa name in 2005.

The Tewa are an ethnic group of Pueblo American Indians who speak the Tewa language and share the Pueblo culture. Their homelands are on or near the Rio Grande in New Mexico north of Santa Fe.

Route 66 travelers who have passed through New Mexico surely recognize the landmark neon sign for the Sun ‘n Sand Motel that has stood along the side of the highway in Santa Rosa since the early '50s. The motel itself was built in 1952 and largely remained unchanged until it was updated and remodeled in 1998, but ended up closing down in 2012.

The Tewa (or Tano) are a linguistic group of Pueblo Native Americans who speak the Tewa language and share the Pueblo culture. Their homelands are on or near the Rio Grande in New Mexico north of Santa Fe. The Arizona Tewa, descendants of those who fled the Second Pueblo Revolt of 1680-1692, live on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona, mostly in Tewa Village and Polacca on the First Mesa. Tewa (also known as Tano) is one of five Tanoan languages spoken by the Pueblo people of New Mexico. Though these five languages are closely related, speakers of one cannot fully understand speakers of another (similar to German and Dutch speakers).
