When I was a kid I read Johnathon Livingston Seagull one morning when I woke up early while staying over at my aunt's house. After that, seagull shapes started appearing everywhere. On water towers in Korea. On the side of ferry boats in New Zealand. Everywhere. For me this symbol of a bird now reminds me of travel, freedom, and independence.

St Catherine's Point is the Southernmost point on England's Isle Of Wight. With hills to the North, there is an abrupt drop at this cliff taking you to the warm micro-climate of the undercliff. We often see herring gulls as individual opportunistic scavengers, but in some instances avian interactions do occur between different species and some of the waders in particular the big waders, such as this grey heron here... do give way to a more symbiotic approach to fishing. I have spent hours just watching and observing these interactions in my local area and along the foryd and come to the conclusion that there is some element of altruism at play here... In some instances, what the gull scares into the shadows, the heron picks up on and vica versa... and so it can often be seen that they fish together... This kind of mutual co-operation can be often seen within the animal kingdom... If only humans started to work from t...

The sign at the entrance to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco I've probably looked at this picture dozens of times but it was only today I spotted an owl in there. Maybe if any locals see this they might be able to tell me how long the owl has been a 'fixture'. Do my eyes deceive me or is there also a rodent of some description over the owl's right shoulder? If I had seen these when taking the picture, I could have zoomed in and got them in focus. These strange tall huts are traditional fisherman's huts found only in Hastings. I don't think they use them anymore, but they have been preserved as distinctive historic buildings, and are very popular with photographers. There are quite a few of them, but few good angles for photographs as they are clustered tightly. For this painting I've used lamp black for the basic colour with a lot of white mixed in, but its not all black and white - there are plenty of other hues blended in : mauve, crimson, vandyke brown, sap green, naples yellow and cobalt blue
