on National Prime Rib Day, we’re headed to our favorite steakhouse. Also known as “standing rib roast,” prime rib is a tender, flavorful cut of roast from the rib section of the steer – just one of the eight prime cuts of beef. While it can be traditionally paired with potatoes, stuffing, and vegetables to make a “Sunday Roast,” there are many unique flavors and recipes to cook up prime rib with. It’s a juicy celebration and one we’re all for.

There’s always been good money in serving up good steaks to hungry folks in Texas and John Zentner's famous steakhouse is no exception. While he started several successful steakhouses, his first well-known venture was the Lowake Inn in Concho County, where according to Zentner, folks came a long way because he sold the only cold beer between San Angelo and Fort Worth, and he had good steaks and burgers to go with it. While the Lowake Inn was a gathering place for locals in this small community, travelers passing through made sure The Inn was on their itinerary and not only did folks come by road, but also by air; a small airstrip within walking distance of the inn allowed pilots of small planes to come and go with ease.

Texas Longhorn

Charles (CM) Russell, the “cowboy artist”, created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians, and landscapes set in the Western United States. He lived and worked among the cowboys and the Blood Indian tribe in his younger years. This painting is called “On the Pond” and depicts a cowboy on horseback lassoing an escaped longhorn steer.

In 1953, Al Berger opened up The Burger Bar in downtown San Jose, creating a popular spot for college students to grab a bite. Over the next few years, Al opened up two more locations. In 1956, he opened the first Burger Pit in Cupertino that featured a charcoal fired grill. The Burger Pit was a hit, and Al opened more than 25 locations throughout the San Jose area over the years where folks could get their charcoal broiled Steerburgers and flat-iron steaks. In the mid-80s, most of the locations were sold to a national fast food chain, but Al kept the primary location on Blossom Hill Road, leaving his son to run the show after retiring in 1986. The Burger Pit enjoyed a run of over 70 years before sadly closing their doors in 2024.
