Grazing American Bison Woolaroc Oklahoma by Debra Martz Shortly, after entering the Woolaroc Preserve, we came upon a herd of American Bison lazing on the grounds near the road but just over the hill was this individual grazing alone. The Bison were first introduced into Woolaroc in 1926 when a herd of 90 of the animals were brought here from South Dakota. At that time, they were commonly called buffalo. In 1925 oilman Frank Phillips built a ranch retreat, Woolaroc, on 3,700 acres in the Osage Hills in northern Oklahoma.
